Guinea coup: Army detains President Conde, dissolves constitution

Soldiers have detained Guinea’s President Alpha Conde in a coup. On national television, coup leader Mamady Doumbouya the head of the country’s special forces says the borders are closed and the constitution dissolved. The United Nations and the West African economic bloc, ECOWAS have condemned the military takeover. Conde won a third presidential term in a widely disputed election last October. Young Zambians hope for brighter future as Hichilema wins vote

Zambian President Edgar Lungu conceded defeat on Monday, after a landslide election win by opposition leader and businessman Hakainde Hichilema. Voters are angry over Lungu’s failure to tackle the ailing economy and his crackdown on dissent. Hichilema succeeded on his sixth attempt to get the presidency. Zambia’s youth largely backed the new president-elect, and now they expect him to ease repression and economic crisis. Rwanda, Mozambique forces pursue rebels after port city recaptured

A joint force of troops from Mozambique and Rwanda which regained control of a strategic port from the armed group al-Shabab in the north says it is still pursuing the fighters in neighbouring areas. Mocimboa da Praia was a major rebel stronghold used by the group to launch attacks in other parts of the mineral and natural gas rich Cabo Delgado province. Rwanda, Mozambique forces recapture port city from rebels

Rwandan forces have helped Mozambique’s army recapture the key northern port of Mocimboa da Praia from an armed group. Known locally as al-Shabab, the rebels used the port to launch a series of attacks across the oil and mineral-rich province of Cabo Delgado. Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the past four years because of these attacks. Zambia election violence: President deploys army ahead of polls

Zambia has deployed soldiers to contain political violence which has broken out ahead of Thursday’s general elections. Several people have been killed in recent weeks. There are 16 presidential candidates – but the main contenders are the incumbent – President Edgar Lungu and opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema – a businessman who has already made several unsuccessful presidential runs. Five years ago Lungu narrowly defeated Hichilema. The opposition alleged vote rigging and there was unrest. Many here worry that history will repeat itself. ‘Taxi war’ takes deadly toll in South Africa

In South Africa, the army has been deployed to Cape Town, as what’s being described as a “taxi war” continues to escalate. Dozens of people have been killed over the past few months, with rival taxi associations battling it out for ownership of a hotly contested route. Ethiopia says second filling of Renaissance Dam complete

Ethiopian engineers have filled the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest and most controversial hydroelectric project, for a second year. Ethiopians hope the dam will provide electricity and lift them out of poverty. But Sudan and Egypt, which lie downstream of the dam, are afraid it will lessen their water supplies and want all three countries to agree on a deal.
