Tanzania’s Abdulrazak Gurnah wins 2021 Nobel Prize for literature

The Nobel prize for literature has been awarded to the Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah. His work focuses on colonialism and the fate of refugees. It is the first time in 35 years that a Black African has won the prize, and comes as the Swedish Academy tries to avoid charges of Western bias. Afghan city defies norm by keeping schools open for girls

The Taliban came to power promising to respect women’s rights and allow girls’ education – in line with Islamic precepts. But high schools and public universities are still closed across Afghanistan as the group says it still needs time to sort out the logistics of allowing female students back. Iraqi youth call for boycott of Sunday’s parliamentary vote

On Sunday, Iraqis will vote for a new parliament, in a snap election under a new electoral law. Iraq has seen large anti-government protests in recent years – against unemployment and lack of services. With so much anger bubbling, hopeful candidates to the parliament have kept a low profile and instead of canvassing the streets of Baghdad, they have taken their campaign to social media to attract young voters. Concerns grow across UK about looming cost-of-living crisis

Rising energy costs and clawbacks on government pandemic benefits are leading to what many see as a looming cost-of-living crisis in the UK. But the man in charge of the purse strings is warning that the UK’s pandemic spending comes at a cost to future generations. Speaking at the annual conference of the ruling Conservative Party, Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said it would be immoral to keep loading debt onto future generations. Officials probe cause of massive oil spill in California

Investigators in California are looking into whether a massive oil spill could have been caused by a ship’s anchor striking a pipeline. It’s being described as an environmental catastrophe. More than 500,000 litres of oil has leaked into the ocean. Crews are working around-the-clock to contain the slick in the Pacific and clean up tar along the coast. Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp down in global outage

Facebook Inc has said it is working to restore access to its social media platforms, including photo-sharing platform Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp, after an apparent global outage. A huge leak of financial documents has exposed what is claimed to be the secret assets and dealings of some of the world’s richest people. The collection of nearly 12 million files from 14 global financial services – known as the Pandora Papers – was published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
