Traffic in Suez Canal resumes after stranded ship refloated

Shipping traffic through Egypt’s Suez Canal has once again resumed, with the Ever Given ship now unstuck. On Monday, tug boats towed the giant container ship to the centre of the canal where it had been jammed for nearly a week. About 15 percent of world shipping traffic passes through the Suez Canal and the blockage had disrupted global supply chains. Tugs, dredgers continue work to refloat ship blocking Suez Canal

Suez Canal salvage teams were alternating between dredging and tugging on Sunday to dislodge a massive container ship blocking the busy waterway, but two sources said efforts had been complicated by rock under the ship’s bow. Dredgers working to dislodge the stranded vessel have so far shifted 27,000 cubic metres (954,000 cubic feet) of sand, to a depth of 18 metres (59 feet), and efforts would continue around the clock, wind conditions and tides permitting, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said in a statement. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered preparations for the possible removal of some of the ship’s cargo to help refloat it, SCA Chairman Osama Rabie […]

No timeline given for freeing huge ship blocking Suez Canal

New attempts are being made to move the huge container ship that has been blocking the Suez Canal in Egypt for the past five days. The stern of the vessel is now free – and the Egyptian authorities say they are hoping higher tides and the arrival of more tugboats on Sunday will help their operation. And as tankers queue, oil prices are rising – the blockage is another blow to global trade already disrupted by COVID-19. It remains unclear when the Ever Given will be refloated. The salvage firm hired to extract it says it could be free within days. But some maritime experts are sceptical. Al Jazeera’s Victoria […]
