Burkina Faso army deposes president Kabore in military coup

Burkina Faso’s army has announced it has deposed President Roch Kabore, dissolved the government and the national assembly, and suspended the constitution, seizing control of the country after two days of unrest at army camps in the capital. The announcement, signed on Monday by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and read by another officer on state television, said the takeover had been carried out without violence and those detained were in a secure location. Syria prison attack kills more than 100, clashes ongoing

At least 120 people have been killed in ongoing battles between US-backed, Kurdish-led forces and ISIL (ISIS) fighters after an attack on a Syrian prison. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “at least 77 IS members and 39 Kurdish fighters, including internal security forces, prison guards and counter-terrorism forces have been killed” in the attack that started on Thursday. ISIL claimed responsibility for the prison break on its Amaq media mouthpiece on Friday. Ukrainians join reserve army amid tensions with Russia

Airbus cancels $6bn contract with Qatar Airways after paint fight

Airbus has cancelled a $6bn contract with Qatar Airways for 50 of its new A321neo passenger jets, escalating a legal battle between the two companies over paint on the recently delivered A350s. Qatar Airways called Airbus’s decision announced on Friday “a matter of considerable regret and frustration”. In December, Airbus was taken to court by Qatar Airways in London, following a series of alleged problems with the Airbus A350 aircraft. The airline complained the paint on the recently delivered Airbus A350s was cracking and peeling, exposing copper meshing used to insulate the aircraft against lightning strike. Syria: Deadly fighting rages on between ISIL, Kurdish forces

US military aid arrives in Ukraine amid Russia border tensions

The first shipment of the United States’ $200m security support package for Ukraine has arrived in Kyiv, the US embassy said.
