US to deploy more troops to Eastern Europe amid Ukraine crisis

The United States is sending 2,000 additional soldiers to Europe and repositioning another 1,000 from Germany to Romania to ensure the “robust defence” of European NATO members, the Pentagon has said, amid the ongoing impasse between Russia and Ukraine. US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday that the troop deployment would take place in the coming days. He said it is separate from, and in addition to, the 8,500 soldiers that the Pentagon put on heightened alert last week. As Russia-Ukraine tension escalates, EU scrambles to secure gas supply

The standoff between Russia and Ukraine has Europeans worried about gas supplies. A third of Europe’s natural gas comes from Russia. And if there is a war – Europe would have to turn to other providers. EU leaders have been clear that a Russian act of aggression against Ukraine would have dire consequences for President Putin and his country. It would mean an end to his hopes of bringing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on time, depriving him of tens of billions of dollars in revenue and depriving the EU of hundreds of billions of cubic metres of Russian gas. Ukraine-Russia crisis: Life inside separatist-controlled Donesk

In the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a breakaway region of eastern Ukraine, little has changed since the fighting broke out in 2014. Most of the people who used to live there are too scared to return because of sporadic shelling and because fears are growing about potential renewed conflict. But the young generation, many of whom were children when the conflict started, seem determined to live their lives as normally as they can. Ukraine-Russia crisis: Western governments put their forces on alert as tension rise

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has prompted one of the biggest mobilisations of Western forces in Europe in generations, but it is a delicate balancing act. The West fears Moscow is preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the Kremlin says it is countering decades of NATO expansion eastwards. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula caught allied Western forces off guard. With European security once again at stake, the NATO alliance wants its presence firmly felt. The first shipment of the United States’ $200m security support package for Ukraine has arrived in Kyiv, the US embassy said.
