Burkina coup-makers accuse France of supporting counterattack

A state of emergency has been declared in Burkina Faso, a day after the country’s second military coup in eight months. The ousted President Paul-Henri Damiba – who was ousted last night by a faction of the military – has called on the country’s self-appointed leader to avoid a ‘fratricidal war’. He also denied a claim by the coup leader that he has taken refuge in a French army camp. Protesters have gathered at the French Embassy in the capital, which was set on fire. Riots shake France’s Corsica over assault on jailed nationalist

Violent clashes have broken out between protesters and police on France’s Mediterranean island of Corsica over the assault in prison on a nationalist figure. Yvan Colonna, who is serving a life sentence for the assassination in 1998 of Corsica’s top regional official Claude Erignac, is currently in a coma after being beaten on March 2 in jail by a fellow detainee serving time for “terror” offences. France: Sarkozy found guilty of corruption, sentenced to prison

0 A Paris court has found Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s former president, guilty of corruption and influence peddling, sentencing him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence. He is the second former president in modern France, after Jacques Chirac, to be convicted of corruption.
