Footage by Japanese journalist killed in Myanmar in 2007 released

The United Nations special rapporteur on Myanmar has urged Japan to join international sanctions against Myanmar’s military junta. That is after relatives of a Japanese journalist called on their government to re-open an investigation into his death. More than 30 killed, bodies burned in Myanmar’s Kayah state

Human rights groups are accusing Myanmar’s military of committing a mass killing against civilians as they intensify an offensive against rebel forces in Kayah state. The Save the Children charity says two staff members were caught up in the violence and are missing. The violence follows a week of government bombing and artillery fire that has forced thousands of people from their homes. But there is fierce resistance from local ethnic groups. UN warns Myanmar military as generals defend power grab

Huge rallies in Myanmar for ninth day as army steps up arrests

0 Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Myanmar’s big cities for a ninth day of anti-coup demonstrations, as the country’s new military rulers rolled back laws protecting freedom and stepped up the arrests of politicians and activists. The military is also bringing back repressive laws used by the previous military government – including a requirement for people to report overnight guests in their homes to authorities. Myanmar police join protest movement
