Thousands evacuated after volcano erupts on Spain’s Canary Island

Thousands of people have been told to leave their homes, after a volcanic eruption on the Spanish Canary Islands. The eruption followed a week of increasing seismic activity on the island of La Palma. With a population of 85,000, La Palma is one of the eight volcanic islands in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago off Africa’s western coast. At their nearest point, the islands are 100km (60 miles) from Morocco. The lava’s slow advance has already consumed entire buildings and authorities are still unsure of the lava’s future path. Shanghai cancels flights as Typhoon In-Fa lashes eastern China

Two international airports in the Chinese city of Shanghai have cancelled all flights and authorities banned outdoor activities as Typhoon In-Fa lashed eastern China with high winds and heavy rains. In-Fa landed in the Putuo district of the city of Zhoushan, a major port in the eastern province of Zhejiang, at 12:30pm (04:30 GMT) on Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV said, citing the China Meteorological Administration.
