Guinea coup: Army detains President Conde, dissolves constitution

Soldiers have detained Guinea’s President Alpha Conde in a coup. On national television, coup leader Mamady Doumbouya the head of the country’s special forces says the borders are closed and the constitution dissolved. The United Nations and the West African economic bloc, ECOWAS have condemned the military takeover. Conde won a third presidential term in a widely disputed election last October. Pakistan warns of increasing ISKP threat and Pakistan Taliban

Pakistan is warning of the increasing threat of the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) and the Pakistan Taliban. On Sunday, two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the first border incident since the Taliban re-assumed control of Afghanistan. Pakistan’s military condemned the attack and said that the Taliban should not allow the groups to use Afghanistan to launch attacks into Pakistan. Taliban issues new warning against extending evacuation deadline

The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. Speaking at a news conference in the capital Kabul on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the US to stop taking skilled Afghans out of the country. The UN’s human rights chief Michelle Bachelet says she believes the Taliban is committing serious violations, including summary executions of civilians and restrictions on women. Taliban says will respect women’s rights, press freedom

The Taliban has promised to respect women’s rights, forgive those who fought against it and ensure Afghanistan does not become a haven for other armed groups. But Afghans and world leaders have viewed the promises the group made in its first news conference in 20 years with scepticism. Many fear a return to the Taliban’s harsh rule from its previous stint between 1996-2001 but the group has promised to be more inclusive within the framework of Islam. Flood warnings in Haiti as tropical storm follows earthquake

Tropical Storm Grace has made landfall in Haiti, with reports of flooding in some areas hit by Saturday’s earthquake. China-Russia military drills: Exercises to focus on security in central Asia

China and Russia have begun a series of joint military drills in northeastern China that the two countries have described as a counterterrorism exercise. The five-day drills in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are taking place just weeks before the US is due to complete its military pullout from Afghanistan, which borders China.
