Russian President Vladimir Putin has begun his rare trip to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia where he is expected to discuss the war in Gaza, among others. Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays says Putin and the Gulf leaders he is meeting share a similar stance on the war and want a permanent ceasefire. “It is interesting when they talk about the US’s role and the US abandoning the Palestinians and going around the Palestinians, actually that was done [by] the UAE … that’s one of the countries that signed the Abraham Accords with Israel. So I think there are possibly some differences there,” Bays noted. “Russia has […]
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has met Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in Dubai, the Syrian presidency said in a statement, in his first visit to an Arab state since the Syrian war began in 2011. Assad has also met Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the state news agencies of the United Arab Emirates and Syria reported on Friday. When asked about Assad’s visit to the UAE, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said Washington was “profoundly disappointed and troubled by this apparent attempt to legitimise Bashar al-Assad, who remains responsible and accountable for the death and suffering of countless Syrians, the displacement […]
In mid-2020, a mobile phone belonging to an Al Jazeera Arabic investigative team was hacked. Over the next few months, reporter Tamer Almisshal and the Canadian research group Citizen Lab investigated Pegasus, the sophisticated spyware used. Pegasus is manufactured by an Israeli technology company called the NSO Group and is among the most advanced spyware in the world. It can access and infiltrate a smartphone without the owner clicking a link, opening an email or even answering their phone – meaning it can go undetected. This investigation exposes how Pegasus works, how governments like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have bought the hugely expensive spyware and how it has been […]
0 Full relations would resume between Qatar and the four nations that had imposed a blockade on Doha, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Tuesday. Leaders from across the Gulf region have signed a declaration calling for solidarity and stability, at a summit held to resolve the dispute that lasted three-and-a-half years. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade ties and put in place a land, sea and air blockade on Qatar in June 2017. 0 Saudi Arabia is opening its land border to Qatar, a move that could lead to a resolution of the three-and-a-half-year diplomatic crisis that led to the blockade of the tiny Gulf state. The announcement on Monday came on the eve of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a diplomatic, trade and travel boycott on Qatar in June 2017, accusing Doha of supporting “terrorism” and having ties with Iran they said were too close. Qatar has repeatedly denied the allegations and said there was “no legitimate justification” for the severance of relations. Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal reports from Doha, Qatar. […]
The political sands are shifting in the Middle East. New alliances are being formed that until recently would have been unimaginable. But as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and, potentially, Sudan forge closer relationships with Israel, where does this leave the Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza? How is Hamas – the elected government of Gaza – and its paramilitary wing, the Qassam Brigades, adjusting to the new regional political climate? In this film, Al Jazeera Arabic’s Tamer Almisshal meets Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniya and discovers dramatic and surprising military preparations that may seriously concern Israel and its allies. Today, the Gaza Strip is blockaded by the two countries bordering […]
The UAE has embraced nuclear power. It says it’s for peaceful purposes. But why diversify with risky nuclear energy when there are safer and cheaper alternatives? And could it lead to nuclear proliferation in the region? Start Here assesses the risks.
Qatar Airways has launched international arbitration seeking at least $5bn from four Arab countries as compensation for blocking it from their airspace and removing it from their markets. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have essentially banned the airline since June 2017 when they cut all ties with Qatar and imposed an air, land and sea blockade on it over accusations of supporting “terrorism”. Doha denies the charges outright and says the quartet aims to infringe on its sovereignty. Qatar Airways said in a statement on Wednesday the measures specifically targeted the carrier with the aim of closing its operations in the four countries, destroying the value […]
