Tens of thousands of people have again marched through the Belarusian capital on Sunday, demanding the President’s resignation.
There have been protests ever since a disputed election in early August, in which incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner, but many allege the vote was rigged.

When we studied hegemony, and discussed super powers, lecturers always taught us the biggest super power of all is public opinion. I really think the efforts to confront protestors is futile. You could dispel the protests very quickly if you just called for fresh elections, and allowed them to be free and fair. It is very clear the government does not want this, and this puts it at odds with its own people, which is ultimately self-defeating. I hope this standoff is temporary only, and the inevitable end of Lukashenko happens with as little friction as possible, so life can improve for Belarus. I am a bit annoyed the international community is not doing more to help. I do nonetheless accept this is something Belarus have to do for themselves, and hope Russia does not adversely interfere, to the detriment of Belarus.

Actions by the EU are the most important way to save the lives of the people of Belarus. Lukashenko is scared of being punished, but now that he’s already gone down this path, his only choice is to continue. Next, he will target groups within Belarus and blame them as the need to arrest, torture and kill through an army that doesn’t show their faces. do you think Lukashenko cares for 1 minute about anyone except for keeping himself in power? if he even cared about his own men, he would not order them to follow him down this same path. it will take a military revolt that sides with the people to decide this.
