Poland-Belarus tension: Warsaw says it will deploy troops to border

NATO member Poland says is sending 10,000 troops to its border with Belarus. Tensions between Warsaw and Minsk – which is Russia’s ally – have been rising recently. Poland says two Belarussian helicopters briefly entered its airspace, last week. The government is also concerned about the border area since hundreds of Wagner mercenaries arrived in Belarus, as part of a deal that ended a mutiny in Russia in June. Wagner mutiny: Putin meets his defence and security officials

President Vladimir Putin has said for the first time that the Wagner mercenary group is fully backed by the state. He said it cost his nation a billion dollars last year. Russia’s president congratulated his forces and hailed their efforts to stop what he called a “civil war”. The head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has landed in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. Mass anti-Lukashenko rally starts after Belarus police crackdown

Belarus protesters continue pressure on Lukashenko with new march

Tens of thousands of people marched through Minsk on Sunday calling on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to step down in mass demonstrations that showed no sign of abating nearly a month after the election his opponents say was rigged. Columns of protesters defied a government warning not to march, waving red-and-white opposition flags and shouting “go away” and “you’re a rat”. The human rights group Spring-96 said at least 70 people were arrested. ‘No more fear!’: Belarus president heckled by striking workers

In an unprecedented act, workers at a factory shouted down Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, who has long been referred to as the father of the nation. Protesters across the country have made it clear they want Alexander Lukashenko out. The main opposition leader, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, said she is ready to lead a transition and is calling on the security forces to switch sides. EU leaders will hold an emergency meeting on the issue on Wednesday.
