China’s fast-growing electric vehicle market is the largest in the world.
After a slump earlier this year, the sale of electric cars nationwide is gaining speed again.
Chinese carmaker Wuling has overtaken Tesla as the top-selling electric vehicle in China. The brand is a joint venture with General Motors to target young consumers and less affluent drivers.
Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu reports from Liuzhou in China.

Is it safe to drive? Sounds like 👍 the price of a high end laptop 👩💻
It’s all relative. Safer than a Volvo? No way. Safer than a bicycle or moped, most likely.
It ahould be way safer than motorbikes
They are working together with GM which is American company which I believe they are checking the safety issues more seriously
And driving a laptop sounds promising(゚Д゚)ノ
Ugly and slow…. Whatever
Like you 😏
still better for the daily commute and it can reach up to 100km/h speed.
I don’t understand why anyone cares about the speed of their cars. Your actual speed is always limited by speed of traffic and the law. A Ferrari won’t get you to the destination any faster than a minivan.
meanwhile in America a 3 wheel pos electric is 25k.
Well we kind of demand that cars sold here don’t kill you when you drive them.
But to be fair you will never drive fast in china …. because the traffic is horrid
@Michael Curtis ive been to china, most people just take the bus anyways
@SL twentyeight I have spent a good amount of time in both dalian and Beijing, the bus system is pretty decent in both. Beijing subway is actually really cool (if not a little confusing on the batong / line 1
Honestly it was one of the best subway systems I have been on
@Ken Kobayashi if production cost was that high. Why is Elon amongst the 2nd richest person on the planet? B.S actually cost for electric vehicles should be a lot less than they are selling it for.
@AI NewsFuze, I’m not sure what point you are trying to make or argue against. Manufacturing a car in the US is more expensive than manufacturing it in China, but if people are willing to pay the higher price, then you can make a profit from it. Even the cheapest Tesla sells for over $35k. Also, Elon is rich because he owns a lot of Tesla stock, and stock prices are based on the profit the company is expected to make in the future, not the profit they are currently making or have made in the past.
I heard that the car company even send you the stickers to make it like a cartoon box. Cute and fancy! Not only big and luxury items trendy and cute!
You got to give it to the Chinese they do know how to make things cheap
@emily walker yea, when they bring it to the USA, it won’t be 5k for it
@Punisher 49 I don’t think they be heading to the US….the US also needs to protect its brand….I think these ones are meant for the Chinese market
@Punisher 49 I guess they pay more than 4 dollars per hours now
@Punisher 49 then you go to china and pay them 2dollar/hour IF YOU CAN.
@arif jau why should I, EV car for 5k, something not right. They might not be paying for cost to built it
Yes yes yes yes yes yes
GM technology, Wuling badge.
It’s Wuling technology now.
@Ken Kobayashi That’s how China works. Misappropriation of foreign technology even if it means espionage.
Elon does not respect Status Quo of other giants. Maybe they’re putting China against him.
Tesla 4 life, non negotiable.
Don’t compare Chinese cars with Tesla. Chinese products are show piece only not long lasting and performance
Tesla iPhone also made in China. even ur under wear moron
there are many other brand expensive cars such as BYD XPeng NIO sales well
I don’t like look of that car
I like Tesla so beautiful
But when I look at my bank account yeah I got it 🤣
awesome comment
able to use local electric outlet is one of the most important things to consider.
If we use solar panels it would cost nothing
Well all EVs can be charged by a regular electric outlet. I charge my Nissan Leaf with an ordinary 110v outlet in my garage. It is just that it would take 40 hours to fully charge my 60 kWH battery. A long range Tesla or other luxury EVs with 80, 90 or 100 kWH batteries would take days to charge from a regular outlet, compared to the tiny Wuling which only has a 10 to 14 kWH battery, which only takes 5 hours to charge.
@tren133 what’s the mileage???
@elf ew The Wuling? According to wikipedia the 14 KwH version has a rated range of 110 miles, which is actually not that bad. The battery is tiny, but the car only weighs like 1500 pounds, so the range is pretty decent. It would make a perfectly good city runabout, but probably not very safe on a freeway.
I see it in China now almost every day
China is gonna RULE the WORLD.
China minds their own business…
Not rule.More like cooperate.Thats US&The West who wants to take over the world.
China just wants to be off the grid and no one could ever mention their name again.
Did the price include the cool seatbelt cover?
Yes. I remember they also send you a cartoon set to decorate the exterior. My Chinese friend told me that the service was also excellent. I wish they could sell it in US because the manufacturer seems a joint venture with GM.
@David Tao Haven’t the Chinese bought out GM yet? They already own Volvo … and soon VW
India is not suitable for these car because of road condition 😃
@Pavan Kumar bhai apni Aukat dekho, phir sapna dekho
@Pavan Kumar and stolen. love it
@Pavan Kumar we dnt like cheap stuff
@Pavan Kumar I purchased electronics for companies. For the same price, chinese products absolutely rank no 1 in quality. Then, Vietnamese or Japanese products. That’s how those Chinese win at the first place. It’s just unrealistic to hope to pay $1 for $10 quality.
@mr.T C I Think Your Country Cant Even Afford Chinese Fake Duplicate products 😂
Nice product, especially it can recharged using a normal electrict outlet.
China has competitive models in the high end luxury EV segment too. NIO, Xpeng, BYD all have high end models that are competitive to Tesla.
And yet in China when people have enough money to buy other brands they don’t buy local. Actions speak louder than words
@Unknown User Chinese car brands are selling well in China, what are you on about? car manufacturers also needs time to build up brand recognition. That takes time to cultivate. But facts are facts China and the US are the only countries with robust EV supply chain and ecosystems. Germany and Japan are stuck in the legacy Automaker trap.
@Unknown User
Same is true for US. Millionaires and billionaires mostly buy European cars.
@Unknown User I see lots of rich Americans driving BMWs, Audis, Jaguars and Range Rovers. How is that any different?
Waahh i want one!! Really cheap and good for the environement at the same time
Nice. The price is equal to the cheapest petrol car in India.
The cheapest electric here would cost $12000 with limited range
Electric scooter is much better investment in my opinion compared to cheap small electric car
But not for women with a child.
Scooters are fine but they don’t provide protection against rain. Summer and winter I can manage.
Love them or hate them, you can’t help but admire China and Chinese goods. The reach and price is unbeatable.
@Keushenflam They are not use for high speed driving. And do you think motor bikes have enough safety measures during crashing?
@Keushenflam maybe you should do some research, before spewing Q stuff.,
@Steph Soltesz Do some research dude. Top speed is 60mph, 75 mile range, no fast charging, 13hp, no airbags, no rear seatbelts, etc. Basically you get what you paid for.
@Eugene Bendersky
U sayin its Bad ?.
Soon we can say, go fork yourself Tesla
Tesla is too high quality for the average user. Not worth paying for what’s unnecessary. Use the money saved to improve other aspects in living.
That’s what people want. Great job
Wow great China
China: i made a cheap election cars.
US: lets do this
i want this car !
👍👍👍👍
Look promising. The US is going ban this, claiming it as a threat to nAtionaL seCuritY.
GM is in the name. It’d be silly to ban their own company.
They would just sell them under the GM brand.
Definitely, the US market has been brain washed to be so anti China that their citizens wouldn’t buy it anyway.
But it’s a joint venture with GM. Plus if the USA bans it, China can just ban Tesla too in retaliation which would be much worse for the USA.
@george jesson US is checkmate in every situation by smart Chinese. You gutsy are a gonna.
Problem with China is, if you’re not happy with them they’ll punish you. It’s hard to deal business with someone who can hold to what’s been agreed on
Sounds very much like the President of a certain major western nation.
Well, try believing stupid propanganda, and shutting down anyone investment in your country based in that..
Oh, lets just forget that that fella , one of your biggest buyers.. aka customer.
Made in China is known to be cheap and low quality as well.
tesla is also made in china
The statement of saving Environment doesn’t match with what China did to the whole world. If they are so concious why did they hide about the virus.
you mean the virus delibrately reported as vape/influnza in 2019?
or the one found in Italy sewage in June/July in 2019?
Made in China is known to be cheap and low quality as well. Yes for CHina Product.
Yeah, that’s why iPhones are such poor quality, eh?
Yes. That’s why yr kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, closet… are full of Chinese products.
$5000? fml
I like the direction the Chinese have chosen.
Clean everyday transport like electric rickshaws & tiny cars should first be made available cheaply to working women.
the government’s only job is to subsidize and not is exactly what it’s doing
They must be subsidised by the government.a car witha a cost of 5000 is impossible
this is the actual cost of car production, in China, there are no registration fee and tax on EV cars.
I see the 5¢ army is strong here
So is the presence of the China-haters, like yourself. LOL
Absolutely, for city rides, it’s the way to go and more than enough.
Not just cities. I would say for people who live in the countryside a few miles from the nearest supermarket, and where public transport is poor or nonexistent, it’s even more compelling. I’d love to have it available here in Ireland.
@bluegtturbo Yeah! You are right and more so for some areas in Africa too.
Hahahaha protect the environment by going electric, 65% of China’s electricity is generated by fossil fuels.
Benefit is it’s a single point source. Now do you understand?
@Robert Hays Electric cars are not “green” especially not in China, now do you understand?
Most of the world’s solar panels are manufactured in China.
Junk r getting better…
Where can I buy this in Australia.
try alibaba, or contact Wuling CS ask them
The best product which China ever made is covid19 a long lasting product
Apple makes it hugely popular in America & they now lead the world in American Covid
Wuling & Others can export ICE Killers to displace ICE Powered Vehicles for very affordable costs. With GM involved, you are guaranteed that the Retail Price would be marked up 300%+ for export PLUS S&H and assorted fees.
Most people do NOT want 0-100 kmh in 5.0 seconds.
Full Digital BLING with Auto-pilot and all that “fluff” is also not something everyone wants.
K.I.S.S. is what the vast majority want… outplace what they have today but with a cleaner & better option. Power Steering, Power Brakes, AM/FM/MP3/CD-DVD radio/stereo, USB Charge ports and your good to go… Cruise Control (not auto-pilot), power windows & locks are nice options.
De-Bling and Simplify , keep it simple & they will sell all over the world.
China can do copy paste only , look good , but run how many day don’t no . Made in China we already no that 😀😀😀😀
Can you please learn how to spell first ?
Good luck powering your cars with no coal for your electricity
China is the leading manufacturer of solar panels. Most solar panels used in the US are manufactured in China. They also have a lot of nuclear power plants with a dozen more under construction.
Good Luck, trying to force CHINA to buy your coal.
Good Luck tryin to keep those mining jobs..
5k for a new car nice
How to buy
Tesla is way out of reach for the ordinary soul. What do you expect?
The thing is that Tesla is also not really “environmentally friendly”. Billions of people in developing markets also want cars, but if they all got Teslas, with their huge lithium batteries and unnecessary performance and tech, the environmental impact would be catastrophic. For the resources of one Tesla, you could probably build like 5 Wulings and allow 5 poor families from the developing world to achieve mobility.
Great. Will they be available outside of China?
Solar roof would be great
Interesting coal powdered car….
@Michael Curtis Well, it’s still a better option than the pure gasoline car.
Fossil fuel is still the major source of electricity globally. Even in the US, the most tech advanced country, there’s 28% coal and 35% natural gas in 2018. I don’t know where are you from, but the energy consumed per capita in China is very low. Do you suggest the Chinese don’t deserve to use electricity or drive a car like you civilized people?
@Shuyang Zhang it really isn’t….
You aren’t just displacing CO2 or making less pollution, you are making more
At the very least it might make sense in ultra urban environments where you are stuck in traffic, but then just take mass transit
Maybe it’s of limited value as a taxi replacement, but then those charging times……..
Let’s be honest, the only reason this works is because of the license limitations on gas engines
I live in a part of the country where most of our energy is hydro powered
I suggest that the Chinese can buy whatever they want, well as long as Mr Xi says so….
A Civil people often do stupid things
Also keep in mind, the US uses a VERY clean coal, and our cities for the most part have clear skies
What I am trying to say to you is that your laws create stupid behavior, mostly be your politicians are not very bright
Much like our own, the difference is that we also don’t lay at the feet of our party, we just make it happen
@Michael Curtis , I already cited a source that shows EVs produce less CO2, not more.
@Ken Kobayashi cool next time actually READ it then “The only exceptions are heavily coal-dependent countries ” that’s would be china
Literally your citation backs up what I have been saying
Thaks for playing
@Michael Curtis
I see you don’t think China has a plausible political system. that’s fine. Time will tell.
Basically, you believe that the Chinese people are brainwashed creatures following whatever the dictator said. Not like you independent critical thinkers.
Typical stereotypes on China here in US. I’m not surprised. But that’s boring… Anything fresh?
Let’s be honest, you know little about China, probably never visited China. How could you be such judgmental on “only reason this works blabla” serious car manufacturer like NIO and many not so much car makers starting long time ago! These’s huge demand for affordable short range vehicles, especially in northern rural China.
US has clean skies, because China took over the most of the highly polluted industries in the past 2 decades. I personally don’t complain about that. China was and still is a developing country. Poverty or pollution, there’s no better option at that moment.
Evidence for the claim? The Electrical car overall makes more pollution than gas car?
Any constructive criticism? Your reply simply useless: burning oil is making more co2, using electricity is polluting more! I guess the Chinese should go back to middle ages then the world is saved!
Please not purchased china car others country, be care pull
Sounds a little wield.
Wuling mini EV never aim at the user group of Tesla, so why compare them together?
Actually there are BYD HAN/XPeng P7/Nio in China, which do competing with Tesla.
When will it be available in India…
Wow Not bad
Meanwhile VW and Polestar take back EV market from Tesla in some European countries
What is the safety rating??
Should be ok. A joint venture with GM and using GM safety standards.
Buy Wuling Motors stock $WMLTF
In the ‘Merica, men require V8 big blocks to secure their manhood, this will never sell.
Still believing China news
Haaa
The nice way to prevent brocken bones of motorcicles acidents… 🛵🏍️…⛑️…
GOOD , LET CHINA TAKE OVER THE MARKET . THEY HAVE THE CAPACITY AND MAN POWER.
Plz come to India
They stole Tesla technology then said thank you see you Elon
What exactly do you mean by “Tesla technology”? Li-Ion batteries have been around for decades. Tesla didn’t invent any key technologies used in electric cars, they were simply the first to invest in large scale production of electric cars.
Do you realise that Tesla buys its batteries from a Chinese company who both designs and produces them. 😂
It’s ugly small and let’s not forget made in China lol not buying this clunky mess
I am not really fond of the Chinese design language even Peugeot’s newer model starting to look ugly trying to appease the Chinese market. Some Chinese makers like Lync & Co, Byton etc are making pretty impressive designs though.
As they are working with GM motors I hope these cars are safe enough for export
Stop whining that America wants or needs these things. Dollars to doughnuts that the Chinese government threw unimaginable amounts of funding at GM to develop/make these cars. So basically the means of production is state-owned and if you’ve even half-a-brain you know that is not a recipie for healthy and sustained growth.
Besides, our capitalistc system has created something vastly better than what the Chinese have… Tesla. Can’t afford one? Work harder. Never mind the fact that if over half of Americans even attempted to finance a Tesla, it would throw them into poverty.
You got China-shi**y and you America-shi**y. Which one smells better to you?
I like her seatbelt. I would buy one for that price. Its really affordable for a ride. Its electric. So, it could potentially last 5 years. So, that’s only $1,000. a year out of the budget.
This thing is the next Volkswagen Fox in china.
This is better than the Japanese kei cars that are also tiny, not fast yet still use a lot of petrol. In Japan kei cars are literally death traps especially on highways. I hope this one will do better.
Tesla is a $100,000 car and they can’t even get the doors to line up.
Tata motors Nano designe they steal
So you have those tata EV cars running on yr street?
I would love to have that tiny babe ! Beautiful to drive around then charge it again
Big cars just don’t make sense for metropolitan cities
I dont understans why electric cars have to be ugly..
Better looking for a higher price I guess? To differentiate the customers?
Very good ..Affordable electric to common man!!
It’s very practical, efficient and affordable. I don’t see other countries doing something like this.
✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
It’s a joint company. Shanghai auto 50%, Gm 45%, wulin 5%.
In west, a lot of people ride bicycle for protest environment. think if they can have a car like this, it will be much easier and better.
china is the most contaminated country in whole world. they using most of power plant fossil fuel so all the smog they produce contaminating air .
Is NIO car any good?
I need one
Jia you China.
Well done China!
$5k..wow ..love to have it available in US
Me too!
Force technology transfer.
You can if that manufacturer sets up factories in yr country
Because golf carts are what pass for an car now.
Hope they didn’t steal the Tesla technology..
Only asian can use this car..
This is designed for the old lady of China🐼🐻
Tesla ripped
This 500k$ electric car is cheaper than nano car in india
What about the speed I don’t want bullock cart.
But people like 4 seater car, most people dnt like 2 seater car even if it’s cheap also, the nano car in India failed even if it’s cheap because it’s two seater,, I think they should work on 4 seater car
Really?. They already surpass Tesla on orders, and selling like hot cakes. 😁
Ahh, i forget.. you must know it better…
Buying anything Chinese
Selling your own Freedom.
The same freedom that Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan experienced?
How is India doin, mate..🤭
@Modi Superpooper 2020 Chinese love Uighur.

Mamarica start crying
boycott all china made products get rid of the CCP
I grew up in a town, where electric vehicles were part of daily life. This was in the 1950s. I didn’t really think much about the reason. These e-vehicles were just part of daily life… The reason was dynamite. All these vehicles belonged to a dynamite manufacturer.
