Protesters in Eswatini – formerly known as Swaziland – have defied a curfew to call for constitutional reforms.
They are demanding democracy and an elected prime minister.
Unconfirmed reports emerged on social media, saying King Mswati fled late last night following civil unrest.

Violence is the last form of political expression available to the oppressed. Read Edward Said for more on this, essentially violence is necessary to put pressure on the oppressive government. Presumably they are destroying businesses and government buildings, not their own homes.
@armana I saw your reply which seems to have been deleted. Those movements you refer to (Martin Luther King, Ghandi etc) all had violent counter parts. King would never have succeeded without Malcolm X, Ghandi would never have succeeded without the countless people who died in armed resistance, Mandela would never have won without armed resistance. Look this up, I really recommend reading Edward Saids book orientalism. It is in the interest of those in power to teach us that violent resistance is unnecessary, because it is the only thing they are truly scared of. Don’t get me wrong, massive civil disobedience movements and labour strikes are essential, but they never single handedly won revolutions/political change (Eg Cuba had Labour strikes, but it was Castro and his fighters who finally topped the Batista regime.)

I think reforming the monarchy may be a better solution for Eswatini. Democracy is really overrated, and especially given the stage of development Eswatini is at, it will quickly devolve into the same corrupt cronyism we see in Eswathinis peer nations. Not that the status quo isn’t corrupt cronyism, it definitely is, but I think a monarchy provides certain stability while democracy is quite destabilizing especially in the context of poor nations where the majority are rural people with little education.
