The North Crimea Canal in southern Ukraine used to supply the majority of the peninsula’s water needs.
Ukraine built dams on the canal after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, saying it would only allow water to flow when Russia ends its occupation.
Russia has been transporting water in, but rationing has reportedly become worse with the arrival of tens of thousands of additional Russian troops.
The area has now become a potential flashpoint between Kyiv and Moscow.

My family is from Lviv and Kiev, many people I know back in Ukraine travel to 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic for work as we’d earn more money in Poland or CZ than in 🇷🇺 Russia, my cousins who are still back in 🇺🇦 Ukraine are go to university in 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands as a Western degree is more valued in Ukraine than a degree from a Russian university and the younger generation (especially from the West of Ukraine) see ourselves as more 🇪🇺 European than Russian. That is our modern identity.
Despite being born in 🇳🇿 New Zealand, I did live in Lviv with my grandparents till I was 12 years old and pretty much had to learn English upon returning to NZ.
My generation of Ukrainians, especially those of us from the West of Ukraine don’t really admire 🇷🇺 Russia or see ourselves at a personal level having a future in or with Russia.

I would think it is a crime to stop water from flowing to Crimea that would be justification enough to seize the area and allow the water to flow.
