Rodrigo Duterte on drugs, death and diplomacy | Talk to Al Jazeera

It’s been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.

Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.

In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy – including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.

“We have three million drug addicts, and it’s growing. So if we do not interdict this problem, the next generation will be having a serious problem … You destroy my country, I’ll kill you. And it’s a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement. There is nothing wrong in trying to preserve the interest of the next generation.”

But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them “collateral damage”.

When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:

“We will not give up anything there; it’s an entitlement … You can only negotiate to prevent a war … They invited me for talks, and I will go.”

Rodrigo Duterte you do the will of your father.

You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
And because I tell you the truth, you believe me not.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe me?
He that is of God hears God’s words: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.

It’s impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror. Horror has a face … and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies.”

  • Luigi Umali says:

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is a God-sent gift for the Filipino people who have suffered a lot since time immemorial. The Filipino people had endured human degradation from the haughty Spaniards who colonized and bastardized our ancestors for about 333 years. The Spanish friars (Catholic priests) together Spanish Governor-Generals and civil guards enslaved and subjugated us through brutal intimidation and malicious indoctrination of Catholic religion over a long period of time. Tired and severely oppressed, our ancestors revolted to emancipate themselves from their predicament, to alleviate from their plight against human degradation and to gain liberty and independence for the next generation of Filipinos. After the two governments duped our revolutionary leaders, Spanish government sold our country for about $ 20 million to the American government. Noble as they are, the Americans despised slavery and colonialism yet, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address might have little effect on the American legislators at that time as they, too, colonized us and abused our natural resources by passing and enacting laws detrimental to our people and our country. Our country again was back to being colonized under different master. This new master brutally massacred a community of our Muslim brothers in order to promote peace and harmony all over the country. It might have been destructive and deadly, but to them, it was necessary to promote morality and institute social justice. The American nobility had once again manifested and upheld its principle of human liberty and social democracy. Upon the attack on the Pearl Harbor by the imperialistic Japanese, our country again suffered devastation brought about by the World War II. The wicked Japanese bastards raped our country by institutionalizing comfort women in the guise of national patrimony and patriotism for about 4 years.

After achieving our full independence on July 4, 1946, our country slowly recovered from the devastation yet still kowtow to the influence of the American government. Even up to this point, the Americans and Europeans want to make this country submit to its whims and caprices. When are these people going to truly respect our independence and recognize our nationhood? When are they going to refrain or restrain themselves from meddling in our internal affairs?

The Filipino people never really experience such pride as they have now compared to all the Presidents elected before. It is only now that the majority of the Filipino people felt real delivery of social service, social justice and economic progress. The president and his government have done something good for the country and its people. Who can claim and declare these things other than the Filipino people who are residing in the country, benefiting from the services and experiencing the social change. These claims can also be correlated to the very high rate of approval of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte if indeed he is delivering his campaign promises since the time he had taken over the helm of leadership. This exemplary approval rating is already too high for Western or European standards. What is more surprising about it is that he is able to SUSTAIN that high approval rating since the first time he assumed the office of the president until now. What he lacks in diplomacy he reciprocates it with action, decisiveness and fortitude. To encapsulate it, he DELIVERS! Despite of all his human frailties, we, the Filipino people, love our president for his candor, sincerity and love for our the country.

We, the Filipino people, do not understand why foreigners interfere in our country wherein they knew nothing about us, knew nothing about our plight, knew nothing how we suffered and knew nothing on what are our desires and aspirations. Why do they not stop their hypocrisy and let this country mind its own business as we do not either interfere in other country’s business or governance? We are our own people and we know what is best for us for we are, like the foreigners, thinking and analytic individuals. We can discern what we like, what we love and what we despise. We despise foreign intervention and we love self-governance under this current leadership. If we are really oppressed and abused, we know how to fight back and bring things in their right places. If need be, we can seek foreign assistance. But right now and right here in our country, we are doing just fine and in fact, our country has never been at its best than before because we have a God-sent leader running our government. We are thankful to God that He finally heard our prayers in making this country exists and develops in the right direction. Foreign media and provocateurs of social chaos in the Philippines, please leave us and our country alone. Go away and find other place where you can make profitable business with your slander and malice.

Duterte seems to be a voracious reader and astute observant. I bet my life this Pres has read The Art of War. Very rare mindset nowadays on Politicians.

Pres. Duterte is having difficulty stopping the druglords. The root of all corruption is the patri-lineal political system of patronage. The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law of 2012 MUST be FULLY implemented to lift the poor from poverty and crime.

Being a filipino for me it is the right choice to kill thousand of addicts than to infect millions of law abiding citizens. by the way for your knowledge Pres.digong will never kill any law abiding citizen like me. For your information there are series of warnings and chances are given prior. If drug lords and addicts resist thats the time for the bulls eye then.

  • Ryan Jaca says:

We are a souvereign state that is the point there. why americans are still trying to dictate us ? we no longer your colony. Why are you questioning our state policy. How dare you to dictate us what is right for our country Since we are not questioning yours. Mind your own business.

  • White Wolff says:

Ang humans rights are para sa mga law-abiding citizens, hindi sa mga kriminal.

  • Set Apart says:

America is a hypocrite ! Leave Duterte and let him handle his business in his own country and address the wickedness in your own country, that you are doing nothing about. This is why crime is so high in USA. They cant even take guns off the street.
.When you finish this interview, lets see you interview the American President and ask them, what are they doing about the constant abuse on black people by the police. Interview China, Russia, Nigeria, and other countries.

  • Daniel Thaler says:

Yeah, rehab. Education……they don’t know what they are doing? Yeah, the Philippines has all this money for rehabs and drug counselors and educators. Duterte has publicly educated all of the drug addicts. He will kill you. End of story. He won’t allow his country to become a wasteland. Stop using and selling drugs. He wants to stop this generational cycle NOW. He estimated 4 million addicts. Couldn’t be more up front and direct. It’s the addicts decision what they are going to do and what will happen to them. Duterte has already made up his mind what he is going to do. I don’t think anyone will be confused by ambiguous statements.

    • Wta4hand says:

Thank you for that from a Filipino who admires Duterte. It baffles me how some people don’t get something as simple as that.

Duterte is a psychotic psychopath. I’m sure someone will kill him; hopefully get someone to help then off drugs and give them needles and clean gear. I’m glad I don’t live in that country. only people with ambition get out and become housekeeper’s at wealthy peoples homes. it’s better pay than the PH can offer anyone. the war on drugs will never end. if they were legalized this stuff wouldn’t be happening. what a complete mess. thou shalt not kill. what a heathen with a black heart.. and he’s ugly as sin.

    • Wta4hand says:

Did it hit close to home? Duterte offered them this – either you rehabilitate yourselves with the government rehabilitation programs, or keep using drugs and risk getting killed through police operations against it. Simple isn’t it?
