Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been found guilty of contempt of court and sentenced to 15 months in jail by the country’s top court. This came after he failed to appear before an inquiry investigating corruption during his time in office. Senegal’s army says it has captured rebel bases in the south. It is the latest offensive against an armed group that wants to create an independent state in the southern Casamance region. Senegal hopes the operation will help end one of Africa’s longest civil conflicts. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, also known as the MFDC, has been fighting for independence from Senegal for the last 40 years. There is more tension between Russia and Ukraine, this time at sea. Russia has closed all naval access to the Kerch Strait. Ukraine said the closure is illegal and violates a treaty. Moscow has said its forces are conducting military drills in the Strait, following the mobilisation of tens of thousands of Russian troops on the Ukraine border in recent weeks. There is a treaty between Russia and Ukraine agreeing to equal access to the Azov Sea, but Russia said it has the right to close the strait for military exercises, exercises that will go on until the end of October.
