Mali’s former coup leader takes power after president’s arrest

Mali’s interim vice president, Colonel Assimi Goita says he removed the transitional president and prime minister from power because they left him out of discussions to form a new government. Goïta says President Bah Ndaw and PM Moctar Ouane were trying to upend Mali’s democratic transition after they took charge of an interim government last August that deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The two leaders were taken to a military base outside Bamako on Monday. The UN, African Union and the European Union have condemned the move which has been described as an “attempted coup”. Extreme cold weather hits China ultramarathon, kills 21 runners

At least 21 people have been killed after hail, freezing rain and high winds stuck during an ultramarathon in China’s Gansu province on Saturday. A total of 172 people took part in the race, 151 have been confirmed safe after rescuers found all the missing runners on Sunday. DR Congo orders Goma evacuation after Mount Nyiragongo erupts

A volcanic eruption near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee for safety. At least five people died in a car crash in the panic. Neighbouring Rwanda has opened its border to let in those fleeing the eruption. Initially, scientists said the lava flow was heading away from Goma, but now they’ve warned that new fractures have put two million residents at risk. Many migrants using inflatable rings and dinghies have often made the dangerous journey from Morocco into Spain. But this week an influx of at least 8,000 was unusually high, threatening a humanitarian crisis. Many were young men, but there were also families and unaccompanied minors.
