UN Security Council rejects US bid to extend Iran arms embargo

Iran will be able to start buying conventional weapons again in October, after the US failed to get a 13-year ban extended. Just one other nation backed it in a vote at the UN Security Council. Belarus releases protesters before EU discussion on sanctions

The Belarusian government has begun releasing people who were arrested during protests this week. It issued a rare public apology in what appeared to be an attempt to stop days of unrest. More than 9,000 arrests in Ethiopia since June killing of singer

More than 9,000 people have been arrested in Ethiopia during recent unrest that followed the killing of a popular musician. That’s according to the state-run Human Rights Commission which says 178 people have died in the violence since June. Critics now worry the country might be sliding back towards repression. Indian Ocean faces growing threat of fuel spill

The MV Wakashio ship still has more than half of its 4,000 tonnes of fuel on board after running aground off Mauritius last month. A state of emergency has been declared because of the threat of catastrophic damage to coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. According to the country’s prime minister, the ship is breaking apart.
