Police forces across US promise reform

After nearly two weeks of nationwide protests against police brutality, several US states are taking steps to reform controversial police practices. In Minneapolis, where George Floyd died in police custody, chokeholds and neck restraints are banned. Mexico police set on fire during protests against fatal beating

While protesters in the United States mourn George Floyd, police brutality is also a concern south of the border in Mexico. Mexicans protested against police brutality in the second-largest city, Guadalajara, accusing the police officers who arrested a construction worker of beating him to death. The government’s human rights minister has condemned the use of excessive force. But police deny that. George Floyd death: Pressure mounts for US officers to be charged

Anger is spreading in the US over the death of an unarmed Black man after a white police officer knelt on his neck while restraining him on the ground in the city of Minneapolis. As new video of the incident emerged that showed George Floyd was not resisting arrest as originally claimed, the lawyer for his family has spoken of a “pandemic of racism”. Protesters demanding justice for George Floyd have come out in their hundreds in downtown Los Angeles, blocking parts of a freeway and surrounding Highway Patrol cars. UN’s outgoing human rights envoy to Myanmar slams Suu Kyi

The UN’s outgoing human rights envoy for Myanmar says the country’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has failed to live up to her reputation as a humanitarian. Her time in the role has been especially dominated by Myanmar’s crackdown in Rakhine State in 2017. About 750,000 people, mostly Rohingya Muslims, fled across the border to Bangladesh. Now Yanghee Lee has told Al Jazeera that she believes Myanmar’s army conducted ethnic cleansing and that Suu Kyi’s inaction was “utterly disappointing”.
