An Afghan diplomat who worked under the prior government has remained at the UN. He is hanging on to his job and the hope of negotiating a more inclusive government. The Taliban has named its own representative to the UN, but thus far, the credentialing committee has refused to consider the appointment. A wave of freezing temperatures is sweeping across much of Afghanistan. In roughly two weeks, more than 150 people have died. Most were those living in remote rural villages cut off by heavy snowfalls. It has thought to be the coldest winter Afghanistan has experienced in a decade – with temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius.
