Russia is preparing a pretext for invading Ukraine: US official

The United States has accused Russia of planning a so-called “false flag” operation in eastern Ukraine, in an attempt to create an excuse for an invasion. The Pentagon says there is evidence Russian agents might already be in the country to carry out acts of sabotage and blame Ukraine for them. Officials probe cause of massive oil spill in California

Investigators in California are looking into whether a massive oil spill could have been caused by a ship’s anchor striking a pipeline. It’s being described as an environmental catastrophe. Taliban seizes key districts in Afghanistan as gov’t forces flee

The Taliban has made significant territorial gains in Afghanistan in the past weeks, as US forces count down to their final withdrawal. Fighters have captured Panjwai in Kandahar, the group’s birthplace and former stronghold, and are inching closer to the regional capital, Kandahar city. Panjwai is the fifth district in Kandahar province to fall to the armed group in recent weeks as the Taliban offensive gains momentum. They claim to have seized more than 100 out of nearly 400 districts in the country, with a strong presence in the north.
