Gabriel Boric wins Chile’s presidential election

A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president. With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast. In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”. Chile declares state of emergency over Mapuche conflict

Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera has imposed a state of emergency over the Mapuche conflict. The Mapuche, Chile’s largest Indigenous group, have been involved in five centuries of struggle for their ancestral land. Mapuche demands have been mainly met with silence, leading some armed groups to attack trucks and farmland in the last 10 years. With the Chilean president under pressure from right-wing factions in his party, troops are being sent to two southern regions hit by the violence. Search for survivor continues under Beirut building rubble

On Friday, Lebanon fell silent to mark exactly a month since an explosion at Beirut’s port ripped through the city. At least 190 people died and about 300,000 people lost their homes. UN: Latin America, Caribbean face worst-ever recession

A regional United Nations body is forecasting the worst-ever economic contraction for Latin America and the Caribbean, following oil prices moving into negative territory as demand drops due to global coronavirus restrictions. Many Latin American countries which produce oil will be hit badly and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean predicts a 5.3 percent drop in economic activity.
