Germany floods: Historic town buried in mud

Rescue teams in Germany are continuing the search for more victims of last week’s devastating floods. Almost 200 people have been confirmed dead in Germany and neighbouring countries. An army of volunteers has been helping German residents who were badly hit by the disaster. Protesters across Europe clash with police over COVID curbs

Countries across Europe are returning to lockdown, as the continent grapples with a surge in coronavirus infections. In Germany, police used water cannon and pepper spray to disperse anti-lockdown protesters in the city of Kassel. In neighbouring Switzerland, more than 5,000 protesters gathered in the town of Liestal to demand an end to COVID restrictions which have shut restaurants and other public places for months. Elsewhere in Europe, there were more anti-lockdown protests on Saturday from Bulgaria to Romania, Serbia to Croatia. Iran’s top diplomat has arrived in France for surprise talks at the G7 summit, an official announced, as US President Donald Trump appeared to brush aside French efforts to mediate with Tehran.
