Countries across Europe are returning to lockdown, as the continent grapples with a surge in coronavirus infections. In Germany, police used water cannon and pepper spray to disperse anti-lockdown protesters in the city of Kassel. In neighbouring Switzerland, more than 5,000 protesters gathered in the town of Liestal to demand an end to COVID restrictions which have shut restaurants and other public places for months.
