Mukesh Kapila, a former UN humanitarian agency coordinator, says he has spent 30 years working in numerous conflicts around the world but describes Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza as “unique”. He says that is because the most modern weapons are being used in one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Kapila also denounced Israel’s repeated attacks on emergency services workers and overwhelmed medical facilities. “What we’re seeing now is that all rules have broken down and there are no norms because this is a war on a whole society. There are really no rules at all. What we need to happen, therefore, is a rescue from outside,” […]

The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, is addressing an emergency UN General Assembly session, and here is what he has said so far in his emotional speech: “For millions of Palestinians, there is no home to go back to. For thousands, there is no family left to embrace, not by an act of God, but the act of a government represented here in this chamber. “[Israel] believes if you say Hamas enough times, the world will not be able to object to wiping [entire families] from the face of the earth. “Why do some feel so much pain for Israelis and so little pain for us, the […]
The United Nations Security Council has again failed to take action on the Israel-Hamas conflict despite a deepening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Russia and China on Wednesday vetoed a United States resolution that called for a humanitarian pause to allow humanitarian aid access, the protection of civilians and a stop to arming Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. A rival text put forward by Moscow then failed to draw sufficient support. The US had toned down an initial draft released over the weekend after diplomats expressed shock at its failure to recognise the humanitarian crisis and its bold statement that Israel had a […]
Antonio Guterres says he was left “shocked” by the “misrepresentations” of his remarks regarding Hamas made on Tuesday during a meeting of the UN Security Council. “I am shocked by the misrepresentations by some of my statement … as if I was justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite,” the UN chief told reporters. “I believe it’s necessary to set the record straight – especially out of respect for the victims and their families.” For in depth analysis, Mahjoob Zweiri is a Professor of Contemporary Middle East Politics at Qatar University. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has renewed his demand for a ceasefire in Gaza and said that international law was being violated in the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Speaking before the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday, Guterres pleaded for civilians to be protected and warned that the fighting risked a wider conflagration in the region. Guterres also criticised Israel without naming it, saying, “protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to […]
