The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. The Taliban will not agree to an extension of the evacuation mission from Afghanistan, a spokesman for the group told Al Jazeera. There have been scattered demonstrations in Afghanistan to mark independence day. In defiance of the Taliban that took over the country on Monday, the Afghan national flag was paraded in the streets. In some cities, the Taliban dispersed crowds with gunfire. But in a rare move, it did allow Shia Muslims to commemorate the day of Ashura.
