US: Hurricane Ida kills one, knocks out power across New Orleans

Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened. Taliban issues new warning against extending evacuation deadline

The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. Speaking at a news conference in the capital Kabul on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the US to stop taking skilled Afghans out of the country. Shia Muslims mark Ashura in Afghanistan amid Taliban rule

There have been scattered demonstrations in Afghanistan to mark independence day. In defiance of the Taliban that took over the country on Monday, the Afghan national flag was paraded in the streets. In some cities, the Taliban dispersed crowds with gunfire. But in a rare move, it did allow Shia Muslims to commemorate the day of Ashura.
