Russia, US call on Afghans to discuss ceasefire after talks

The Afghan government and the Taliban have reportedly agreed to speed up peace talks. Russia has been hosting talks in Moscow which have been taking place less than two months before the deadline for American troops to pull out of Afghanistan. The US, Russia, China and Pakistan have urged the warring sides to reach an immediate ceasefire. US troops withdrawal: Afghan forces try to maintain calm in Achin

The Trump administration plans to withdraw 2,500 US troops from Afghanistan in January, in a further push to end its longest war. Many US bases are being handed over to the Afghan army despite a surge in violence. Afghanistan: Gunmen storm hospital compound in Kabul

Afghan forces have evacuated dozens and ended the siege at a maternity hospital in Kabul, killing the three gunmen behind the deadly attack on the government-run hospital in the capital, the interior ministry spokesman said. At least four people were killed in the morning assault on the Barchi Hospital, the interior ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
