Niger coup leaders accuse France of violating airspace, freeing ‘terrorists’

Niger’s coup leaders are accusing French troops of carrying out a plan to destabilise the country. They say French forces released ‘captured terrorists’ in the east of the country and French aircraft have violated its airspace. But no evidence has been provided. France has more than a thousand soldiers in Niger, as part of a mission against armed groups. France has denied the accusations. Niger coup leaders rebuff overtures backed by US, UN & AU to talk

Military leaders of the coup in Niger have refused to receive representatives from the United Nations, the African Union – and the regional organisation, ECOWAS. The coup leaders said their safety could not be guaranteed. US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland flew to Niamey on Monday but was denied permission to meet with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani or with Bazoum, who is in detention. Lake Victoria boat accident kills at least 20 in Uganda; several missing

At least 20 people have died and five are missing after an overloaded boat capsized in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria. Police said the vessel was carrying charcoal, fresh foods and fish when the accident happened at 5am (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday. Burkina Faso and Mali warn against foreign intervention after Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any intervention in neighbouring Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their two countries, a signal of support for leaders of the recent coup there. In a statement released on Monday, the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso also refused to implement what they called “illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions” against the Nigerien people and authorities. The message comes less than a week after soldiers guarding Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum took the leader into custody on July 26, declaring they had “put an end” to his administration. Sudan rejects African mediation efforts, Khartoum says language around talks incorrect

A delegation headed by several Horn of Africa leaders has reached a roadblock in its mediation effort to stop the fighting in Sudan. The Sudanese Foreign Ministry rejected the proposal made by eight African nations, saying the language surrounding the talks is incorrect. The government in Khartoum says describing the conflict as a ‘fight between two generals’ is a false narrative.
