South Africa: Death toll reaches 45 in KwaZulu Natal floods

Flooding in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province has killed dozens of people. It follows heavy rain on Monday that has swept away roads, submerged homes and forced many people from their houses. Several others are missing and mudslides are hampering rescue work. The government has deployed the army to help emergency teams. Life sentence for Burkinabe ex-leader Compaoré for Sankara murder

A Ouagadougou court has sentenced former Burkinabe President Blaise Compaoré to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor, the revered Thomas Sankara. The long-awaited verdict brings to close a six-month trial about the murder of Sankara who was assassinated on October 15, 1987. Military prosecutors had requested a 30-year sentence for Compaoré, who was being tried alongside 13 others. Compaoré now lives in Ivory Coast and refused to take part in the trial. Sankara, a revered pan-Africanist leader, was murdered alongside 12 others by a hit squad during a putsch that brought his friend and comrade-in-arms Compaoré to power. France, European allies announce military withdrawal from Mali

France and its allies in a European force have announced they will begin withdrawing troops from Mali after nearly 10 years fighting an armed unrest. A statement signed by France and its African and European allies and published on Thursday said that “multiple obstructions” by the ruling military government meant that the conditions were no longer in place to operate in Mali. The decision applies to both France’s Barkhane force in the Sahel and the Takuba European force that Paris had been trying to forge along with its allies. Moroccan rescue workers edge closer to child trapped in well

Rescue teams in Morocco say they are getting closer to reaching a young boy who fell down a 32-metre (105 feet) well. He has been trapped since Tuesday. Crews say that they are less than 2 metres away from him now. A team is digging out part of a hillside in a delicate and dangerous operation to reach the five-year-old. Heavy gunfire heard near presidential palace in Guinea-Bissau

Heavy gunfire has been heard in the capital of Guinea-Bissau near the seat of the government, according to media reports. Heavily-armed men surrounded the Palace of Government on Tuesday, where President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam were believed to have gone to attend a cabinet meeting. The presidential palace is located on the edge of the capital close to the airport. Sierra Leone struggling to recover 20 years after civil war’s end

The war ended 20 years ago in Sierra Leone, but the recovery and reconciliation processes have been slow.
