Human rights groups concerned about Colombia security bill

Rights groups say Colombia’s controversial security law violates human rights and the opposition says they will challenge it in the Constitutional Court. The law claims to guarantee citizen security with tougher penalties, but critics say it violates the Constitution, dangerously expanding self-defence laws among other provisions. It also increases penalties for damaging public infrastructure or when protesters wear a mask, potentially turning protesters into criminals. The bill was approved by Congress this week and is expected to be signed off by President Ivan Duque. Flawlessly preserved 66-million-years-old dinosaur embryo found in China

Scientists have announced the discovery of an exquisitely preserved dinosaur embryo from at least 66 million years ago that was preparing to hatch from its egg just like a chicken. The fossil was discovered in Ganzhou, southern China and belonged to a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur, which the researchers dubbed “Baby Yingliang.” “It is one of the best dinosaur embryos ever found in history,” University of Birmingham researcher Fion Waisum Ma, who co-authored a paper in the journal iScience, told the AFP news agency on Tuesday. Gabriel Boric wins Chile’s presidential election

A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president. With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast. In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”. At 35, Boric is set to become Chile’s youngest-ever president. Fifty years of Bangladesh: Stateless Bengalis feel abandoned in Pakistan

The Pakistani government has congratulated Bangladesh on the nation’s golden jubilee and invited the prime minister to visit Islamabad. As Bangladesh celebrates 50 years of independence from being East Pakistan, there have been mixed reactions among displaced Bangladeshis in Pakistan. Thousands have remained stateless despite bilateral ties between the two countries. And the war of independence remains a painful subject.
