Guinea: Three die in protests marking second anniversary of coup

In Guinea, three people have been killed in confrontations with police and protesters – on the second anniversary of the military coup there. That is according to opposition groups. Meanwhile, the transitional president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, failed to turn up at a military government-sanctioned concert in the capital. ECOWAS meeting: Bloc set to discuss politics, regional violence

West African leaders are due to meet in Ghana’s capital as the region sees an increase in attacks by armed groups. Leaders of the ECOWAS bloc are also expected to review sanctions imposed on a number of countries under military rule. Another concern for West African leaders as their economies struggle, is the rise of protests against inflation and shortages. Analysts expect more demonstrations like the ones recently seen in Ghana, sparked by the rising cost of living. And they say, there is little regional leaders can do to stop this from happening. Guinea coup makers name army governors, promise ‘unity’ gov’t

Guinea’s coup leaders have replaced regional governors with military officers and released political detainees after they deposed President Alpha Conde on Sunday. Coup leader Mamady Doumbouya promised a “new era for governance and economic development” but did not say when or how this would happen. Guinea coup leader bars foreign travel for government officials

Guinea’s military rulers have barred government officials from leaving the country. Coup leader Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya summoned cabinet ministers and told them to hand over their passports and official vehicles. The former French Foreign Legion officer led a military unit that removed President Alpha Conde on Sunday. Later, he announced that the constitution was declared invalid and that the country’s borders were closed. Guinea coup: Army detains President Conde, dissolves constitution

Soldiers have detained Guinea’s President Alpha Conde in a coup. On national television, coup leader Mamady Doumbouya the head of the country’s special forces says the borders are closed and the constitution dissolved. The United Nations and the West African economic bloc, ECOWAS have condemned the military takeover. Conde won a third presidential term in a widely disputed election last October.
