Afghanistan bitter winter: Severe cold kills more than 150 people

A wave of freezing temperatures is sweeping across much of Afghanistan. In roughly two weeks, more than 150 people have died. Most were those living in remote rural villages cut off by heavy snowfalls. It has thought to be the coldest winter Afghanistan has experienced in a decade – with temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius. Afghan women protest after Taliban enforces university ban

Protests have been held in some cities in Afghanistan against the Taliban’s decision to ban women from universities. Demonstrators have in Jalalabad and Kabul, pledged solidarity with female students. Girls have already been banned from middle school and high school. Badri-313: The Taliban brigade patrolling Kabul’s airport

More than two months since chaotic evacuations from Kabul’s international airport after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, things are slowly returning to something closer to normal. The airport is open to aid deliveries, as well as a few charter planes and evacuation flights. An elite unit of the Taliban is now in charge of securing the airport. Afghan city defies norm by keeping schools open for girls

The Taliban came to power promising to respect women’s rights and allow girls’ education – in line with Islamic precepts. But high schools and public universities are still closed across Afghanistan as the group says it still needs time to sort out the logistics of allowing female students back.
