A trial has begun in Burkina Faso for 14 people accused of involvement in the assassination of former President Thomas Sankara. Sankara came to power in 1983 and was shot dead four years later. He was a revolutionary leader who had called on African countries to default on unfair international debt. Among the suspects is former President Blaise Compaore. Compaore was deposed in 2014 following a popular uprising that brought an end to his 27-year rule. He lives in exile in neighbouring Ivory Coast and has refused to take part in the trial. His supporters see it as a political witch-hunt. Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports. – Follow us on […]

Iraqi youth call for boycott of Sunday’s parliamentary vote

On Sunday, Iraqis will vote for a new parliament, in a snap election under a new electoral law. Iraq has seen large anti-government protests in recent years – against unemployment and lack of services. With so much anger bubbling, hopeful candidates to the parliament have kept a low profile and instead of canvassing the streets of Baghdad, they have taken their campaign to social media to attract young voters. Some social media influencers are calling for a boycott of the elections because they say politicians need to offer better policies to tackle Iraq’s challenges. This adds to the challenges that independent candidates face in every election, in a country where […]

The European Commission is considering a plan to impose a universal charger for all brands of mobile phones, tablets and headphones. A legislative proposal presented on Thursday details why there should be a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones. The move would likely affect iPhone-maker Apple the most. Hezbollah-brokered Iranian fuel arrives in crisis-hit Lebanon

Much needed fuel has arrived in Lebanon to ease the country’s crippling shortages. The first of several truck convoys carrying Iranian fuel from Syria was arranged by the Iran-backed Hezbollah party. Importing fuel from Iran risks US action under the current sanctions. That is why the Iranian backed Lebanese armed group says it chose to offload at a port in Syria and bring the supplies through illegal crossings – so Lebanon will not have to deal with sanctions-related complications. The Biden administration, which considers Hezbollah a terrorist organisation, has chosen not to respond. Some say it is because of efforts to restart negotiations with Iran on a nuclear deal. Al […]
