Facebook Inc has said it is working to restore access to its social media platforms, including photo-sharing platform Instagram and messaging app WhatsApp, after an apparent global outage. Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened. It struck 16 years to the day since Hurricane Katrina hit the same area, killing nearly 2,000 people. Governor Edwards said it is one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Louisiana in recent history. The death toll from the collapse of the Surfside tower in Florida three days ago has risen to nine. More than 150 people are still unaccounted for. The United States has announced plans to pull nearly a third of its military personnel out of Germany in a continuing dispute over defence spending.
