Columbus landed in South America (the first time on either Americas) in 1498. He’d managed to land at the various islands (Cuba, San Salvador, etc) in 1492 or later. Leif Erikson landed in North America (specifically, Greenland, though he called it Vinland) around the year 1000. The did not discover it as native peoples were already there.

The existence of humans in the Americas before the ‘First Nation’ is not a new idea. Other dark skinned people may have crossed the South Pacific in ocean going canoes to South America and subsequently got wiped out by the ‘Native American’ ‘arrivals from the north.
