Many leaders in the German government have campaigned for an end to fossil fuels and atomic energy.
But those goals have been put on hold, as an energy crisis intensifies.
Some are now arguing that continued use of nuclear power and fossil fuels are the only way to solve it.

As a citizen of a country in the Global South, my observation: when my country, or other similar countries in the Global South says that we’re too broke to opt for Green Energy (nothing can be compared to cheap coal and gas and oil, for now). EU threatens us that they will not allow our products into EU region, as well as discourage capital investment into our country if we don’t satisfy certain Green “standards”, e.g. not using coal. Without capital/investment, we hardly have a chance to escape poverty… In case of EU, EU simply says: “due to circumstances (Russian operation in Ukraine, leading to energy cost increasing), we *allow ourselves* to turn back to coal/gas; and we make the rules, so this is OK and acceptable”.
My question: would EU sympathize with the Global South in this expensive journey of transforming to Green? Even EU is rich and full of capital, they still resort to coal/gas/oil (even for now), how can a Global South country, which is poor and underdeveloped, not have this privilege? Can we just say: Due to circumstancces (poor and underdeveloped), we have to use coal/oil/gas?

@Darvin Milevic Supposidly we all are going to switch by 2040. It does not feel long enough for such a massive transition. Also, how much energy is required to run an entire transport fleet on electricity, and where is all this energy going to come from?
I have never heard a politician yet, who can sensibly answer this question.
coal is cheap, yes, gas is not. it makes no sense to develop gas infrastructure unless your developing nation has enough gas to viably export. coal is much cheaper, but it will kill thousands of your countrymen through air pollution.

That’s the problem of leadership. They had a long term plan and decided not to stick to it. Instead they chose short term symbolic sanctions that allowed Russia to make more money and ruined their long term planning. Cheap fossil fuel from Russia benefited Germany and was suppose to help facilitate the green changes. Now China, India, turkey, middle east is purchasing cheap Russian energy for their domestic consumption and selling their domestic production for huge gains to Europe.
It was russia’s choice to start a war in Europe. So they can no longer be a major supplier of anything to the EU.
Russia will now have to sell most of their oil and gas in Asia, at a much lower price.
@TheGreatDane but they’re making more money this year selling energy than last year. These sanctions won’t work until you get China or India to buy in.
@Dat Truong russia was making good money last year, because they could still sell their oil in Europe where the price was high. But now they have to sell it in Asia, at a much lower price.
@TheGreatDane You’re right. Would you reconsider sanctions if russia made more money this year (2023) than 2022. Seems like Europe is subsidizing the price of energy for other countries. The countries buying energy from russia are winning. Eventually free market will take over and other countries will want that cheap energy bidding up prices.

2022 was the year german greens/environmentalists experienced real life politics. They ultimately threw over all their ideals: accepting gas from the “oh so bad Qatar”, were in favor of sending weapons to war-torn countries, turning on coal plants, accepted a extension of nuclear plants even tho 2022 was the year the greens wanted them to officially shut down, etc. Yet some of them still live in a bubble it seems. Todays environmentalists are those who can afford it. Ppl at the bottom cant, they just try to survive. Yet those greens all preach water but drink wine.
