As the world slowly begins to reopen after COVID-19 related lockdowns, the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing an intensifying arms race.
One of Asia’s biggest markets for arms dealers and their clients, the militaries shopping for the latest technology and weapons, kicks off this week in South Korea.
At the Seoul ADEX trade show, leaders in defence ministries and officials from 28 countries will look to strike deals as the world starts to move on after the pandemic.
This rising interest in weaponry comes at a crucial time for the Asia Pacific region.
North Korea just last week put on a show of its latest weapons systems – pledging to build what it called an “invincible” military.
Neighbour and ADEX host South Korea is to focus on new technology to counter its rival to the north, and its continuing development of nuclear weapons.

Of course, all this is urged and ramped up by the MIC of both US and S. Korea. The US sees the Korean Peninsula as a foothold into China as a strategic military base and will gladly sacrifice it as its battleground if necessary. Yet enough Koreans steeped in Cold War rhetoric brainwashed by US propaganda will gladly comply. If and when battle breaks out with N. Korea it is the US military general that will be the de facto leader and not the president of S. Korea. Like so many countries, S. Korea is more or less a vassal state of the US. Civilization have only improved with deadlier and better toys but not enough actual civility and no independence and sovereignty allowed. Absolutely no lessons learned even after two decades of Afghanistan. That in the long run, better weapons won’t win wars.

Although South Korea relies on the US military to certain extent, they can forge their own future independence, such as self-developed KAI KF-21 as well as strong defense industry. In contrast, Japan is totally dependent on the US. Japan even signed Plaza Accord back then to please the US even at the risk of decades of loss, which actually happened. Japan is a true vassal state of the US in Asia.
I know it is sad Japan could do just as good or better than South Korea but they are controlled by the U.S. because of their past – 1800s to 1945 . I hope Japan could be redeemed and loose from the U.S. and I hope they can apologize and South Korea becomes allies with them . They don’t really need the U.S.
Japan has fought against the United States in the past, and South Korea is in a close truce with North Korea.

@Dannnsss yeah . I heard this situation before in regards to the East Asian countries sour relationship . I don’t know what is wrong with Japan and their behavior and attitude towards South Korea and its history . And South Korea still holds resentment for these problems with Japan . Like you and others point out Japan remains insincere and ignorant and not respecting and remembering history . Maybe in the future when new generations come up this will heal . I believe the older generation are still holding on to their evils and controlling history , for example in schools the history is overlooked .
They need to arm themselves against a more agressive China.
Imagine the world where all of these is unnecessary. So much money can be channeled for climate change action, etc.
