Tsai Ing-Wen’s emphatic re-election win sent a clear message that Taiwan rejects China’s plan for reunification with the island.
It’s a remarkable turnaround for the president, whose party suffered major losses in local elections just a year ago.
However, months of anti-government protests in nearby Hong Kong boosted her campaign. Scenes of police cracking down on demonstrators appear to have galvanised younger voters.
Tsai warned that Taiwan’s democratic rights must be preserved. The island has its own military, currency and a passport accepted in most countries. But, crucially, it does not have a seat at the United Nations.
Only 15 countries officially recognise Taiwan’s democratic government…and the United States is not one of them. But Washington is the island’s most important ally and trading partner.
So how might Beijing respond to Tsai Ing-Wen’s win, which gives her a second term in office?
And how far is the U.S. prepared to go to defend Taiwan?

There may be good number of people in Taiwan who identify themselves as Chinese, but that does not mean the CCP controlled PRC. Thus to question self-identity of people in Taiwan is not exactly a good way to study the issue. I may see my self as a Chinese under ROC, but will never see myself as a Chinese under PRC. Our value is heaven and earth different.

Is 57% considered a landslide victory?
If Pres Tsai is convinced the majority of the Taiwanese wants Independence, why doesn’t she take this bold step and declare Taiwan’s Independence? What is holding her back? And why is US commitment to Taiwan still the same if it is so concern about Taiwan’s freedom and democracy? Why doesn’t the US lead the way and recognise Taiwan as an Independent country?
As to whether the US will fulfill its commitment to Taiwan if China were to take over the former by force, my take is that the US will not. The reason is because the cost to the US will be too high and I honestly doubt the US will be willing to pay the price. Taiwan to the US, is just like a mosquito. The US uses it to irritate China. Other than that it has no strategic importance.
Assuming the US fulfill its commitment to defend Taiwan if the later is attacked by China, there are 2 obvious outcomes:
1) The US lost. This will have vast geopolitical implication on the US as the sole superpower. It will completely shatter the myth of US invincibility.
2) The US won and managed to save Taiwan. Unfortunately this will only be a pyrrhic victory? Why? China will just withdraw to fight another day.
So I can see no way Taiwan can escape China’s grasp eventually. To me, the best option is for Taiwan to be part of China but to be still autonomous. The One Country Two system.

Landed in Philippines & loudspeakers announced 60 day layover. Told my companion (Air Policeman) on plane I’d get us out of here. Went out on flight line, noted a courier aircraft from Taiwan, and we were in Taipei that evening. Chinese army drove us to the base in mountains. We also had free use of their firing ranges. Some of the soldiers were surprised we owned & used private firearms. They admired the USA for its fantastic freedoms they could only dream about. Many Chinese, after seeing what Yanks in Taiwan were like, decided to immigrate to good old USA. To us, they were welcome.

Japan had full administrative authority (ownership) since the Qing Dynasty ceded administrative authority to Japan in 1895. Japan committed an unconditional surrender to the USA at the end of Japans fighting during the end of WWII. The USA ALLOWED the Guomingtang to act as the Administrative authority but never granted full administrative authority to the Guomingtang. In other words, Taiwan is still a US territory. If China attacks Taiwan, it is an attack and act of war against the USA.

Like many places in the world, like pre-colonized America, white colonists invaded and occupied much of China, enslaved, raped, looted, pillaged, forced opium, stole treasure, sacred relics, looted the entire China treasury and killed millions of Chinese. Just look in your museums for some of great examples. The KMT was a puppet government of the US and they took Washington’s money, extorted Chinese people, controlled the giant opium trade, and after the British-US opium war 1&2, Taiping Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion etc… overthrew The Royal Qing Dynasty ran China into the ground from 1911 to 1949. That’s why Mao and all the poor people asked Russia for help to kick out the Americans, Europeans, Japanese, and KMT who in 1949 fled to Taiwan with much of China’s wealth. Taiwan KMT planed on returning to the Mainland for decades, but it’s too late, they’re too weak, so now they want independence, and that’s too late too, they’re too weak. Technically they’re still at war like the Koreas because US likes to keep their enemies divided and conquered, but their time is running out too. Tsai Ling Wen is the new Taiwanese US puppet in charge of subversion, insurrection, destabilization, containment and a possible overthrow of China again if the US has it’s way.
