In this video, I will show you some of the things that I continue to buy as a financial minimalist. Although I have sold most of the items that I own, I found there are some things that I need in order to function at a high level of productivity.
The purchases that I describe in this video fit one of three criteria:
1. It saves money
2. It increases efficiency in my life
3. It makes me happy

What are you doing in life other than talking in front of a camera for YouTube? You need to raise the bar on your ambition. A minimalist life is not an end in itself.
@Team Halexy And your so modest about it LOL
@Herrick Inman it’s just the law of averages. Most people are straight.
that rek is amazing where you get it?
You save money and you save videos! Youre The BOSS
First time in over 5 years I heard someone talking about udemy. 🎉🎉
😂😂😂watching this video as I eat chipotle
Still looking for a free French press???
I stay single and save %80 of my money 😁
So true 😂
When it comes to clothes, I’m very comfort-over-style focused, and I try to buy “investment” pieces. They need to last me a while and be fashionably versatile. I’m not very fashion-forward either, and my style is basically a lot of jeans and flannel, but I can layer clothes under flannel for the colder seasons, and leave them open over a tank or something during the summer. Jeans, if you really want to avoid laundry, can be worn 2-3 times a wash, and tend to be more on the durable side. And I keep them until I outgrow or wear them out too far. They last me years. The only articles of clothing I’ll buy over $30 are jackets and tennis shoes, though I plan to dish out money soon for some good, durable boots. If I’m buying one or more new article of clothing every month, I better be updating/redoing my wardrobe (this should not need to be done often – once a year is too much, unless you’re throwing things out), and/or replacing worn-out items. You shouldn’t need to buy new clothes every month. The fact that people think they need a clothes budget set aside blows my mind. Unless you got money to spend, you shouldn’t be doing that at all. Buy what you need when you need it, and expect them to last. Buy things like underwear, socks, undershirts, etc. in packs when you can, and get the nicer ones – they tend to last longer and feel better. Buying new formal/work-appropriate clothing for a job or a special occasion (vacation, party, etc.) are reasonable exceptions, but trying to make sure those special purchases can see more than one use out of you is also important.
Hey! 🙂 greetings from Hungary! 🤗 I watched just a few of your videos, but i can tell that you are conscious and can manage your life well. If i remember correctly, you are younger than me (i am 23), am i right? I would like to ask you some questions, because i am courious. I hope this is not nosy for you (you don’t have to answer them). What is your job? Have you ever studied in a university?
Who is this prick who didn’t realise that he could get a hair cut by someone other than himself and his mum until he turned 19. Jheez
Nate, I’ve been doing some work on self esteem and family issues and finally today decided to have a go at seriously starting a craft business. Cleared out my living room to make a workshop, have a shopping list of materials for my work tables etc. I’ve watched a few of your videos and you have a great businesslike approach. It made me feel so silly for procrastinating when I’m lucky enough to have enough money to live, a seasonal job I love, and some good ideas. It’s time to bring all my ideas to the table. Thank you for the motivation! 🙂
Interesting the drier. Is one of the most electricity sucker appliances.
In terms of hang drying, its also way better for your clothes and will make them last longer!
Robo vac
Great video! Two things:
1: healthcare is always a good investment
2: that’s not maroon that’s bordeaux
How about “bathe two birds in one bath” instead of “kill two birds with one stone”? I am a big believer in using positive phrases rather than negative ones wherever possible. Birds love to be bathed but no bird would wish to be stoned to death. That would be a horrible way to die. Both phrases denote being productive but the first one does not involve cruelty. Just food for thought.
Don’t advertise Audible, they are the worst!! It took me 4 tries to unsubscribe to them. Love your video BTW, so I am planning my 2020 financial year with your advice.
I am doing my final week of purging my house and I am watching your videos for tips. I am a new minimalist.
I am a new minimalist. I walk every where, provided it is not more than 2 miles, so I don’t need a bike. I love cardio walking. I do not use my car anymore unless the place is definitely far. I never ever cut my own hair. I am getting a trim today 😊. I am shopping for affordable health care right now, and dental because in 3 months I need to get some surgery 😊. I am cleaning up my life and really getting into being a minimalist. I loooove to read so I got Kindle unlimited, which is a gift from husband. I have spent under 400 bucks on writing education, and I am having plenty of writing success and I have also made money teaching writing.
Do you use dishes? I am a minimalist purging my kitchen. I use now only the two plates and bone China bowl, I got from my mom’s house when she died. I have two piece plastic containers I use. I am really struggling trying to get my husband to purge the kitchen. He won’t let go of all the access dishes…etc.
Before going on a long flight, I download some e-books from my public library.
Do you boycott amazon ? They do have more choices for free.
You havw great hair, idk what youre talking about!
I think he is an INTP for sure, for all my fellow psych lovers
I would kill to have ur hair lol
“My hair’s not great, it’s not that nice.”
I hope your barber is not watching this video. 😉
I spend money on magnum condoms. Kids are expensive.
What are magnum condoms?
Coin collecting is a nice hobby
Me a 19 year old that cut’s his own hair.
3:22
Runs to the mirror to reasure my self.
09:00 smoooooothhhh 😂
I watched some of your videos and i first thought that you got some good tips but now i just think that you are morbidly stingy
Your bit about hobbies at the end is important. My main hobby Video Games, costs me $60 a month max. During a year where I upgrade my PC, it doubles to $120 max. However, I only upgrade every 5 years. On the flip side of things, I have friends who drop $60+ a weekend buying drinks or doing other misc stuff. Have to be smart about which hobbies you choose because small purchases add up QUICK.
how did you sell your things ??
you do have style, you don’t follow fashion.
Woah K-Mart. I’ve only heard my elementary school teacher say that word.
You DO have style, you’re just not into “fashion” which is fickle and can be a waste of money. Style is much cooler!
Air drying is also better for longevity of your clothes. Definitely a good investment if the time is not an issue. Or even air drying only the bigger items will help you save.
Don’t buy a French press, they’re a disappointment! Get a pour over and some Chemex filters instead!
I have the same water filter as Nate O’Brien.
Telepathy
Hang drying clothes makes clothes last longer!
Yes, but this saves only, if you use clothes until they break. Most people don’t do this.
They also buy protective covers for their cellphones, but they don’t use it longer.
8 years that I been with my boyfriend, he been cutting his own hair every 2 weeks. Now I know, he save a lot of money.
😍😍😍😍😍
I just don’t understand why people are so shocked when I or other people say they are minimalist. In their minds, they probably think minimalists have nothing. Instead, minimalists only have items they essentially NEED. Minimalists probably have an environmentally-conscious and financially-efficient mindset when it comes to owning items. Isn’t it common sense to think, “Why pay for that item or own that item at all if it it doesn’t anything for me?”
Thanks..
2:37 i was raised in a house that had one of these and god is it so useful. i get so tripped out when i go to the grocery store and just watch people load shittons of bottles of water into their cart like,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you’re paying for water? separate from the stuff you have at home? or do you just not pay the water bill and wash yourself in a bath of poured-out bottles? i get that people can pay their water bill and for bottled water at the same time but damn what a massive fucking waste of a shitload of money.
Brilliant idea to not compromise on personal appetence … should b difference in frugality and being a dull miser …!
I’m Dutch. I have two bicycles.
Holger P. Why do some people have two cars? I have a road bike for sporting and a city bike for just getting around.
@ThaWord I don’t know any people with two cars. Except couples if both want to go separate. You seem to live on millionaires drive, if you know Singles with two cars. Since the risk of a bicycle being stolen is pretty high, I had expected more something like you have a 1000€ bike for joy, and an 200€ bike that you dear to lock somewhere in the city. Technically, only the racing bicycles with very thin tires, are not so nice in the city with cobblestone pavement and Tram Tracks, any other like Mountain or Tracking bike are rather universal.
Holger P. In the Netherlands we have more bicycles than people
@ThaWord Sure, for the tourists to rent some out, and if you include the bicycles on the bottom of the channels 😉 I’m German, it’s not that different, but 2 bicycles is rare. Maybe cause of you need all purpose bikes inside and outside of cities. It goes up and down, paved and unpaved, it has to have light and 2 breaks whenever you hit a public road. Maybe people with 2 appartments also have two bicycles 😉 Or today people buy eBikes and the old one is still good and they keep it.
Holger P. 1.3 bicycles per capita on average
Very Good
So many good facts in all of your videos and all I think again and again while watching is: “Nice appartement, Dude…” 🙂
No smoking-no drinking-no gambling-no driving-no borrowing helped me to accumulate enough money for buying a small apartment in Athens Greece. Basically if you have your own house and you don t depend on car to get around you can be financially well off even with 700€ income per month. Cycling-walking-using public transport- using a taxi occasionaly
One thing I plan on doing when I move out it’s just having several ice cube trays and never buying ice. I like having a lot of ice when I drink iced tea or when I just wanna really cold glass of water or lemonade, but I think it’s so wasteful to pay for ice. It’s just like how it’s wasteful to buy bottles of water. You’re pretty awesome Nate!
Would u recommend buying a router or renting from Verizon or xfinity? Also I’d love to c a video of what u have splurged on. Good ones or bad. Like splurge splurge.
I think you save quite a bit more by not having a dryer, given that you don’t have to invest in one, and then get it replaced after 5-8 years. So I‘d say maybe 175 USD per year, for families even more
You should text on the screen as you name off your list. My suggestion.
You are truly an inspiration for me
What products do you use in your hair?
Great vid 👍🏼
You can shop at thrift stores for better clothing. Yes, there is a ton of junk in there but there are jewels also. Just be picky.
Genuine question, what’s in most peoples pubic water, that’s so bad? Here in SE England, my water tastes great, and is treated/cleaned by the water company, why should I bother with a water filter? Sometimes I hear people say they live in an old house, and they have lead pipes, what they don’t realise is, the amounts of lead that are consumed is infinitesimal, unless the pipes suffer trauma.
Also you can get high quality clothes at second hand stores or discounts is still cheaper
nate your tips are pretty common knowledge, but i like listening to them cause it kinda reminds me im not an idiot
Anyone have a suggestion for which water filter to buy?
My Health Insurance is The Almighty God, The one who feeds me, gives me water to drink and keeps me strong when im sick.
INSURANCE COMPANIES are a SCAM most people don’t know about.
Damn i really like this crew neck , can you tell me where’d you buy it ?
All these minimalists seem to be saving a huge amount of their money for something else that would be much more interesting. Yet, we don’t know what that really is. But wouldn’t Google street views of Paris with good home-prepared food would be better for the environment (flying is toxic), your wallet (after 30, you don’t really want a cheap b&b with strangers) and more authentic (instead of overpriced low-quality croissants for tourists, you eat something you yourself have prepared). Unless you’re a monk living in a Taoist monastery without wifi, washing machines or tv and Netflix, you’re not a real minimalist. Which is not a bad thing, but living like that in urban areas todays is simply impossible if you want to go the whole way.
Can’t believe u didn’t put affiliate links in your bio haha
You have great water:) We, in Ukraine, Russia and so on, do not… We have to buy water in bottles
Shave your own head and you never have to pay for haircuts… though I do miss the experience of someone cutting my hair. Very relaxing.
Hi Nate,
I wanna give a little suggestion, it must be better if you mention one by one then write down in the screen, so we as a reader can write and understand your explanation. Thank you 😊
You can make ANY look clothes stylish if you have muscles.
Stop playing that hair is so sexyy
Love your videos. My dad used to cut my hair when I was kid. I did not allow him during middle school 😂🤣
Wow, you should earn money from being a male model.
biking is dangerous.
Videos like yours keep me on track with my spending
Oh yeah, & as The Great Chanel stated ” Fashion Changes, Style remains..
my “spare” money goes into video games that I keep (if theyre my favourites and if rare), play and flip or resell. its good fun and makes me money
I wrote a letter to a water bottling company about 8 weeks ago asking them why I should buy their brand at £2 for 2 litres bottle versus the stores brand at .20p for 2 litres, I’m still waiting for a reply.. I’m prepared to buy the expensive brand if they can convince me
The type of insurance I detest buying is house insurance, been paying it relentlessly since 1982 and havent claimed a penny
Aww hey handsome, you’re hair looks great! Don’t say it’s not. I’m not too experienced with financial stuff and not always sure what your talking about although iam starting to learn now but main reason I watch is because I like to watch you as you’re hot 😍 you’re a good teacher. Can you teach me some other things too?…. Or maybe you need me to teach you hehe…or learn together 😜
Yeah! Zero water is awesome 🙂
I would like to go this route but I think its especially hard when you have a family and kids. Apparently I’m the ONLY one that wants too. LOL
Nice tips, but there is nothing wrong cutting your own hair, saves a lot of money especially if you go for a clean buzz cut,(some skills needed though and a good hair clipper) ,and def important to care a bit for your appearance basics moisturizer, beard trimmer, nice cologne, shoes etc.
Packing lunch is truly a money-saver. Oprah endorses that too and it is very pragmatic.
Only if you are used to dine-out 😉
@Holger P. – that depends on each individual. Saving money is only for the smart people.
@Sriram Ganesan No, you need to have money, to save money. Not spending the money that you not have, is not art.
@Holger P. – anyone making a living can make 10% of minimum savings per month. Need to make smart choices to live frugally now so you can enjoy your riches later.
I really doubt your city water is that bad for you but I guess I live in Canada and am not afraid of lead or stuff
in my water….
Do a video about hobbies that make money…
*h o m e p a y .Me* is a first level landing page to procure usd From your home room. for me , it was Plucky .
absolutely Unbelieavable
I love your attitude bruh…..
I also did the same thing ..
When I needed a phone I bought a cheap phone as I’m just 15 years and that phone is a hunt bruh….
And i spent the rest of my money on buying some books that I wanted to read and they are also a good purchase bruh.
Brilliant advice.
Which song did you use for the videooo? Can I get it anywhere?
Hey Nate. I never had a smart phone but I will need one so I can run my hot dog cart business with Venmo and import pictures of items I wish to sell on Facebook. But I don’t need another monthly bill or service and I need a phone that is EASY to use & take great pictures. I also need a bigger screen. Hate small tiny devices. Any thoughts?
I wish I could go out and buy a haircut but we in quarantine
Your honesty is amazing⚡️
🤩 The metal detector story is so cool 🤩
If you are young and beautiful, you can effort not to take care on clothing 😉 But you have a watch and a chain and a haircut, don’t say you don’t care for style.
It’s not the style of clothing you have to discuss, what about “Do I need more than 1 Pair of shoes” ? I mean I have one for jogging, one for hiking, one for daily life, one for the opera. Is this already too much ? So it’s more: Have a reason to buy something. An invalid reason is “I want something new” or considering shopping an entertaining event.
I didn’t turn stingy to myself, but I rather spend on events (concerts, vacation) than on items that one needs to store.
I desagre about the hair because your hair is nice, while my hair is like a grass. So I need a haircut lol
Buying window blinds and curtains would be a good idea lol
Hey Nate! I really like watching your videos 🙂 I really like your humility.
Complete idiot.
Hey Nate, where did you buy that red jumper from, it looks amazing!
🍉hairsick
dude, don’t use plastic containers, hot food melts the plastic.
Love uh from India just realized after watching your videos that I wasted soo many money in rubbish things
