An investigation has begun into the mysterious deaths of hundreds of elephants in Botswana.
Nearly 300 carcasses were discovered near Seronga in the Okavango Delta over the past few months.
But as Al Jazeera’s Charlotte Bellis reports, it is believed the number of dead elephants could be much higher.

Don’t rule out natural poison, I have seen cows dying after drinking a stagnant water with algae, on a hot day water can kill instantly. This very sad, they should monitored the catchment

Africa is hot, maybe the elephants drank to much water and got water intoxication, drinking more then a liter (L) can cause: water poisoning, water toxemia, hyperhydration, head pain, cramping, spasms, or weakness in your muscles, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness and fatigue, would explain why there walking in circles.
Set a camera by the lake and watch to see how much there consuming.
For humans we have virus tests , bacteria etc . Unfortunately we dont have such records what kind of virus or bacteria infects them . Botswana government has been culling elephants since last year. Maybe the nature is just helping you. When the elephants become extinct in your place, your tourism industry will surely be affected.

This disease of elephants is caused by a blood parasite _ Trypanosoma evansi _ which is carried by biting fleas and mosquitoes. It is a wasting disease: however much the elephant eats it never puts on weight. Oedema appears in the dependent parts of the body, there is muscular weakness, and finally paralysis. The elephant has slow, lethargic movements; gets exhausted easily; and has intermittent diarrhoea and fever. I believe cattle grazing in this area also have a problem. Just my thoughts. Also dietary deficiencies caused by poor veldt conditions brought on by the severe drought can ultimately cause a Vitamin E deficiency which also have the symptoms.
