Mass evacuations as super Typhoon Rai slams into Philippines

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in the Philippines as “one of the world’s strongest storms” of the year made landfall in mid-eastern parts of the island nation. The Philippine’s weather bureau, PAGASA, said Typhoon Rai made its first landfall in Surigao del Norte’s Siargao Island at 05:30 GMT on Thursday. Crimea water dispute: Russia struggles to supply region

The North Crimea Canal in southern Ukraine used to supply the majority of the peninsula’s water needs. Ukraine built dams on the canal after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, saying it would only allow water to flow when Russia ends its occupation. Russia has been transporting water in, but rationing has reportedly become worse with the arrival of tens of thousands of additional Russian troops. The area has now become a potential flashpoint between Kyiv and Moscow. UN officials have condemned the killings of at least 10 people in Myanmar’s northwestern Sagaing district allegedly perpetrated by government security forces. Helicopter crashes with India’s defence chief on board: Air force

A helicopter carrying India’s chief of defence Staff General Bipin Rawat has crashed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, killing him and at least twelve other officials, according to the Indian Air Force (IAF). General Rawat was on his way from the Sulur IAF Station to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington in Coonoor when the IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter in which he was travelling crashed in a forested area in the Niligris district around 12:20 pm. Iraq marks return of looted Gilgamesh Tablet from the US

A small clay tablet dating back 3,500 years and bearing a portion of the Epic of Gilgamesh, that was looted from an Iraqi museum 30 years ago and recently recovered from the United States, has been formally returned to Iraq. The $1.7m cuneiform tablet, known as the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet, is one of the world’s oldest surviving works of literature and one of the oldest religious texts. It was found in 1853 as part of a 12-tablet collection in the rubble of the library of Assyrian King Assur Banipal. The tablet was looted from an Iraqi museum during the 1991 Gulf War.
