Niger sanctions trigger shortages: Niamey faces basic provision scarcity

Niger coup leader proposes three-year transition to civilian rule

Niger’s coup leader has proposed a three-year transition to civilian rule after meeting a delegation of West African leaders and warned that any attack on the country would “not be a walk in the park” for those involved. Niger coup leaders rebuff overtures backed by US, UN & AU to talk

Military leaders of the coup in Niger have refused to receive representatives from the United Nations, the African Union – and the regional organisation, ECOWAS. The coup leaders said their safety could not be guaranteed. Lake Victoria boat accident kills at least 20 in Uganda; several missing

At least 20 people have died and five are missing after an overloaded boat capsized in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria. Police said the vessel was carrying charcoal, fresh foods and fish when the accident happened at 5am (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday. Burkina Faso and Mali warn against foreign intervention after Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any intervention in neighbouring Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their two countries, a signal of support for leaders of the recent coup there. In a statement released on Monday, the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso also refused to implement what they called “illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions” against the Nigerien people and authorities.
