The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident. This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control – it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani’s government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country. Ethiopia’s state media is reporting that the second phase of filling of the country’s controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is nearly complete. The issue has raised tensions with Ethiopia’s neighbours, Egypt and Sudan. They want a binding agreement over the dam’s operations and have approached the United Nations Security Council to intervene. Ethiopia says the project is essential to its development, but Cairo and Khartoum fear it could restrict their water access. Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour says the international community has an “immediate responsibility” to bring about a ceasefire with Israel. The United States, a close ally of Israel, has for the third time this week reportedly blocked the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) statements condemning Israel’s actions and calls for a ceasefire. The latest UNSC meeting ended without reaching any consensus. The Security Council has met four times in the last eight days, with Norway, Tunisia and China warning that the violence must not continue. As Israel’s army continues to bomb the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday, at least 35 Palestinians, including 12 children have died. At least five Israelis have died after Hamas, which rules Gaza, launched multiple rocket attacks from the Palestinian-controlled territory. The rocket fire came after Hamas demanded Israel pull its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Gaza has not been subject to such intense bombardment since 2014. The number of coronavirus cases reported in India since the start of the pandemic has exceeded 20 million. It came as the health ministry announced more than 300,000 infections for the 13th straight day. And with nearly 3,500 deaths in the last 24 hours, the number of fatalities has topped 220,000.
