Ukrainians join reserve army amid tensions with Russia

Ukraine is shoring up its defences and calling up civilians to join the military reserves in preparation for a possible Russian invasion. A third of Ukrainians say they are ready to volunteer to help the government form up to 25 brigades set to be deployed in cities across the country. They are part of the strategic defence plan – providing popular resistance in case the Ukrainian army is overwhelmed. US military aid arrives in Ukraine amid Russia border tensions

The first shipment of the United States’ $200m security support package for Ukraine has arrived in Kyiv, the US embassy said. The delivery followed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Kyiv this week amid concerns from Ukraine and its Western allies over tens of thousands of Russian troops amassed at the border with Ukraine. Russia denies planning a new military offensive. Ukraine’s defence minister thanked the US for the aid. Meanwhile, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will send US-made anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine in a move that Blinken said Washington was fully endorsing. Warning of Russian invasion of Ukraine stokes fears

The US and Russia have held what they say are frank talks as they try to resolve their standoff on Ukraine. But the discussions have failed to find a breakthrough. For many Ukrainians, the build-up of Russian troops at the border has echoes of 2014, when war came to the east. Theranos’s Holmes found guilty on four counts in fraud trial

A United States jury found Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes guilty of conspiring to defraud investors in the blood-testing startup. Holmes was convicted Monday on four of 11 counts. She was acquitted on four counts, and the jury could not reach a decision on three counts. Gabriel Boric wins Chile’s presidential election

A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president. With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast. In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”. At 35, Boric is set to become Chile’s youngest-ever president. Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Santiago, Chile. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: […]
