The issue has raised tensions with Ethiopia’s neighbours, Egypt and Sudan. They want a binding agreement over the dam’s operations and have approached the United Nations Security Council to intervene. A delegation from Southern Africa’s regional bloc is due to arrive in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, on a fact-finding mission. For days, Eswatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, has been rocked by the largest pro-democracy protests in years that have seen security forces engage mostly young demonstrators defying an overnight curfew in running street battles. The protests were sparked by a June 24 decree by King Mswati III, banning citizens from sending petitions to parliamentarians to demand democratic reforms. Armed with shovels, buckets and determination, entire families of fortune seekers have travelled from across South Africa to a small village in the country’s east in search of what they believe to be diamonds. It started when a herdsman dug up a huge crystal-like stone in the small village of of KwaHlathi in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Senegal’s army says it has captured rebel bases in the south. It is the latest offensive against an armed group that wants to create an independent state in the southern Casamance region. Senegal hopes the operation will help end one of Africa’s longest civil conflicts. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, also known as the MFDC, has been fighting for independence from Senegal for the last 40 years. A spokesperson from Senegal’s military told Al Jazeera that they suspect rebels of fleeing to neighbouring Guinea Bissau. Mali’s interim vice president, Colonel Assimi Goita says he removed the transitional president and prime minister from power because they left him out of discussions to form a new government. Goïta says President Bah Ndaw and PM Moctar Ouane were trying to upend Mali’s democratic transition after they took charge of an interim government last August that deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The two leaders were taken to a military base outside Bamako on Monday. The UN, African Union and the European Union have condemned the move which has been described as an “attempted coup”.
