Empowering women: Zimbabwe’s all-female mine provides work, relief

Mining is usually a male-dominated industry. But Zimbaqua mine, located in a rural area in northern Zimbabwe, is the first of its kind in Africa to employ entirely a female workforce to dig up precious blue aquamarine gemstones. Its focus is on sustainable mining and empowering women in the region, most of them unemployed. Gambia investment boom: Diaspora remittances fuel local economy

A sharp increase in the amount of money sent back home by expats is fueling an investment boom in The Gambia. And much of that cash is ending up the real estate sector. An estimated 120,000 Gambians live and work overseas, most of them in Europe and the United States. It is a sign of hope for an economy that has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. China warns countries against interference on Taiwan

China’s defence minister has issued a stark warning: foreign interference in Taiwan is ‘doomed to fail’. Wei Fenghe’s address at the Shangri-La dialogue in Singapore focused on Beijing’s stance on Taiwan. Tensions between China and the US are front and centre on the last day of the summit. On Saturday the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accused Beijing of intimidation and aggression towards Taiwan. China says the island’s reunification with the mainland is inevitable. Worshippers gunned down during church service in Nigeria

Gunmen opened fire on worshippers at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria and also detonated explosives. Dozens are feared dead including children. Lawmaker Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole said the attackers targeted the St Francis Catholic Church in Ondo state just as people gathered on Sunday. Among the dead were many children, said Oluwole, who visited the scene and also the hospital in Owo – a town in the state where many of the wounded are being treated. The motives and the precise death toll were not immediately clear.
