Myanmar fighting: Military is losing key bases to armed groups

Fighting in Myanmar is escalating between the military junta and rebel groups in the east. The violence has been focused near the border town of Myawaddy — an important trade hub and source of revenue for the cash-strapped military. Rebels say hundreds of soldiers have surrendered. Myanmar military pledges decisive action against opponents

Myanmar’s coup leader Min Aung Hlaing has pledged to deal decisively with “terrorists” fighting against his rule as the military put on an annual show of strength for Armed Forces Day. The senior general delivered his remarks on Monday after soldiers marched in formation through a parade ground in the capital, Naypyidaw, backed by armoured vehicles, missiles and artillery as well as fighter jets and helicopters flying overhead. World accused of ‘sitting and watching’ as Myanmar slides to war

One year since the military coup in Myanmar, calls for international action are growing louder, notably from the National Unity Government (NUG), made up of elected politicians who were thrown out of office by the generals. “The world is doing nothing but just sitting and watching,” NUG Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung told Al Jazeera.
