US-China defense chiefs meet for first time

The defence chiefs of the US and China have met for the first time, as tensions between the two countries continue to rise. China has warned the US president not to underestimate Beijing’s resolve on Taiwan. Joe Biden said he’d intervene, militarily, to defend the island from any invasion. China fears: Taiwan considers extending army conscription

Taiwan is considering extending mandatory military service for young people following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The defence minister says four months of service would not be long enough in the event of a conflict. Military drills have taken place on the Dongyin archipelago, a string of islands that are closer to mainland China than they are to Taipei. Taiwan seeks arrest warrant for suspect in deadly train crash

Officials in Taiwan say the death toll from Friday’s train crash could rise, as they search through the wreckage. Families of some of the 51 people known to have died so far held a vigil at the site.
