Army Major General William Taylor, with the U.S. military’s Joint Staff, told a news briefing more than 10,000 people were at Kabul airport waiting to be evacuated from Afghanistan. The Pentagon claimed it evacuated some 19,000 people in the past 24 hours. More than 70,000 people, foreigners and Afghans, have been evacuated since August 14, the day before the Taliban swept into Kabul. The Taliban will not agree to an extension of the evacuation mission from Afghanistan, a spokesman for the group told Al Jazeera. The move would mean “extending occupation” and that is “a red line”, Suhail Shaheen, a member of the Taliban delegation in Doha, the capital of Qatar, said on Monday. There have been scattered demonstrations in Afghanistan to mark independence day. In defiance of the Taliban that took over the country on Monday, the Afghan national flag was paraded in the streets. In some cities, the Taliban dispersed crowds with gunfire. But in a rare move, it did allow Shia Muslims to commemorate the day of Ashura.
