Taiwan tension: US and China trade strong words at ASEAN meeting

At the ASEAN meetings in Phenom Penh, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has overshadowed the gathering. ASEAN foreign ministers warned that the risk of miscalculation in the Taiwan Strait could lead to confrontation among the major powers. The United States has described China’s military response in the Taiwan Strait as a “significant escalation”, while China has warned the US against creating a bigger crisis. China warns countries against interference on Taiwan

China’s defence minister has issued a stark warning: foreign interference in Taiwan is ‘doomed to fail’. Wei Fenghe’s address at the Shangri-La dialogue in Singapore focused on Beijing’s stance on Taiwan. Tensions between China and the US are front and centre on the last day of the summit. On Saturday the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accused Beijing of intimidation and aggression towards Taiwan. China says the island’s reunification with the mainland is inevitable. US-China defense chiefs meet for first time

China fears: Taiwan considers extending army conscription

Taiwan is considering extending mandatory military service for young people following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The defence minister says four months of service would not be long enough in the event of a conflict. Taiwan seeks arrest warrant for suspect in deadly train crash

Officials in Taiwan say the death toll from Friday’s train crash could rise, as they search through the wreckage. Families of some of the 51 people known to have died so far held a vigil at the site.
